BOTTOM DEFEATS TOP IN BIG SHOCK OF LATEST ROUND

SIMON ZOPPI
LEADERS EDGEFOLD No 1 fell to their first league defeat of the season, 3-2 at home to bottom placed Bolehill Institute in the big shock of this week's T & M Motors Snooker League schedule.
Bolehill, who have shown improved form since the turn of the year, thus gained their third win in four starts but had such a torrid start to the campaign that they remain several points adrift of the nearest team.
Neither team really showed their best form in this encounter but Colin Marchington put the visitors into an early lead with a solid enough 54-17 triumph in the opener.
The second frame was probably the best quality contest of the evening with a magnificent green to pink clearance from nowhere securing Steve Burton's tenth win in eleven league games and rubber-stamping a great comeback after he trailed by 23 with just two reds remaining.
Simon Zoppi took a largely scrappy third frame 42-33 and the next continued in the same vein before Ian Birks secured it on the deciding black from well adrift to make the game safe.
The pairs leg again showed Burton to good effect, as he provided most of the panache including taking the frame winning pink as the hosts reduced the arrears to the minimum margin, leaving them still with a very healthy advantage overall.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 fell 4-1 at home to Tansley Potters but Phil Longden put in a starring performance with a superb run of 33 to provide their only register. Steve Hawkins took both his singles and doubles legs for the victors.

There was also defeat at home for Alfreton No3 by the same scoreline, with Crich Comrades taking the spoils in impressive fashion.
Martin Byard and Ade Smith were in fine form for the Tramwaymen with wins in singles and doubles whilst Ady Lowe was on target for the Amber Valley cuemen despite having to give the extra handicap for turning out twice with his team under-manned.

Edgefold No2 scored an excellent 3-2 win at Belper Royal British Legion in the other fixture, though Justin Weller struck first for the hosts on a black ball decider.
Roy Taylor and Rob Muxlow played pivotal roles in turning the game around as they won each of their singles legs and then teamed up to winning effect in the deciding doubles 49-20.

In the OMYA Cup Individual Scratch event, Ben Monk edged an enthralling clash with Rob Mulliss 3-2 in perhaps the tie of the round while Ricki Slack and Lee Hage shared successive re-spotted black ball deciders in the opening jousts of their match-up which eventually went to the Bolehill player 3-1.

In the Elliott Carpets Billiards League, Mayfield are one point ahead of Tansley after beating them 14-10 thanks to breaks of 35 and 34 respectively from Mark Jennings and Keith Gregory.
Bolehill Institute drop to third after succumbing 14-7 to Whitworth Institute, with Jim McCann's run of 37 the highlight which leaves all teams in contention with two games to play.
