EDGEFOLD No1 KEEP THE WINNING HABIT IN CUP FINAL

EDGEFOLD No1 L-R: Duncan Harwood, Sean Dobney, James Travis, Steve Burton
and Scott Brooks.
EDGEFOLD No1 lifted the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup after defeating home side Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 4-0 in the final but the games could all have gone either way in what was actually a closely fought contest despite the scoreline.
Des Smith was quickly into his stride for the hosts with a couple of reds and colours early doors but opponent Sean Dobney came back strongly and the game was in the balance with brown onwards remaining.
Smith caught the jaw of the middle pocket with his attempted pot and after that the Matlock cueman stepped in to take a fine brown, blue and pink to give his side the early advantage.
Up next were Andrew Haggarty and Scott Brooks and this soon became an edgy nip and tuck battle with scoring at a premium but with the Amber Valley cueman rattling the corner pocket on the brown with the rest, it was a case of deja vu with the visiting player mopping up brown, blue and pink once more to make it 2-0.
Frame three saw Phil Longden taking a slender lead after some fine pots with just pink and black remaning but his attempt down the side cushion found the jaws and James Travis stepped up to take the two remaining colours this time to prevail.
So at the point of no return, John Smith had the task of turning over the league's winning-most player this season Steve Burton and he gave it a good go, but  eventually the Matlock player potted a storming pink to edge a tight frame which was certainly not without incident.

In the Elliott Carpets Billiards League, Tansley Potters scored a great 14-5 win at Whitworth Institute to return to the top of the table with just one round of fixtures remaining.
Steve Hawkins with a 33 break took the fine scalp of Jim McCann, no mean feat on his home table and Joe Neville rubber stamped the evening with runs of 34 and 31 en route to his own success.
Mayfield Institute are two points behind after being held 11-11 by Bolehill Institute, who are not totally out of it themselves but a further three points back.
Keith Gregory (31 break) and Andrew Brough were successful on the night.
