JAXX Q CLUB No 2 of Belper this week provided what to many was one of the upsets of the campaign by ousting last seasons league runners-up Edgefold Club of Matlock at the quarter final stages of the Captains Cup team knockout competiton.
John Williams started the ball rolling with a 24pts success in the opener and Andy Hayes continued the good work to such effect that after two frames, they were 79 points ahead.
Although Robert Muxlow and Neil Parkinson clawed back some of that margin, the Belper team still held a 51 points advantage going into the final doubles and they made no mistake with John and Andy continuing their earlier good work to see their side home by 298-220 on the aggregate scores.
Their semi final opponents will be Bolehill Institute No 1 who came through a tough test at Belper Strutt Club No 2 who had held the upper hand for much of the encounter.
All four singles frames were very tightly matched, with the home side winning three of them courtesy of Fred Doran, Stewart Jackson and David Devenport.
That meant they held a 21pts lead going into the concluding doubles match but with Lady Luck not smiling on the Belper pair, the deficit was eventually overturned by Ricki Slack and Colin Marchington, the latter's early 22 break being particularly important in the circumstances.
PJ'z Club No 1 of Ripley fell behind to Belper Strutt Club No 1 when Wayne Shooter scored a 28pts verdict in frame one but Andrew Gratton soon rectified matters, winning by 56pts to turn things around.
John Smith and Steve Bullock each registered for their teams before John again, partnered by Ben Monk in the doubles, saw their team safely through.
They will play Matlock Golf Club who beat Jaxx Q Club No 1 by 36 points on the final aggregate. Graham Jones was largely instrumental in this, winning his singles match convincingly after the visitors had made a healthy start thanks to Alex Fisher and Tim Maslin.
In the B Division Individual competition semi finals, there were 2-0 wins for both Graham Jones and Steve Robinson who now meet in the final after Steve compiled a superb 52 break during his victory.
Captains Cup Team knockout competition quarter-finals: PJ'z Club Ripley No 1 321, Belper Strutt Club No 1 268; Jaxx Q Club Belper No 2 298, Edgefold Club Matlock 220; Matlock Golf Club 282, Jaxx Q Club Belper No 1 246; Belper Strutt Club No 2 239, Bolehill Institute No 1 268.

REMINDER TO CHECK YOUR HANDICAPS IF IN DOUBT!
JUST A reminder if in any doubt to check your handicaps either on the website or against the latest sheet that went around the clubs with the last competition draws (updated in February) as there have been a number of discrepancies lately with players playing off the wrong mark.
Thankfully none of the frames involved have been particularly close so it hasn't affected any results hopefully, but could easily do so if this continues.
There have been at least three cases with people who had been playing off the same mark for half the season suddenly getting an extra 5pts in their favour, and in some cases the following pairs matches were also affected later on in the evening with one or two of the same players taking part.
The February handicap list also shows those players who were liable for change in the near future (depending on how they fared in the short term), any such changes have been posted up on here and also communicated to the respective team captains since then, thanks.
