| IAN McKAY ... thrice winner at Edgefold |
Edgefold No2 travelled to Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 needing to take a 5-2 win to usurp their rivals and grab second place in Group A after both had previously been defeated by winners Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2.
John Roseman took the opener for the hosts 42-27 but tightly fought contests in the next couple of frames went to the visitors' Martin Barwick and Scott Brooks before Mark Bower equalised at 2-2.
Josh Dakin and Trevor Wright nudged the Matlock side ahead again but Lee Shaw and Callum Greenfield made sure it was the hosts who qualified by picking up the all important sixth frame to equalise even though Dakin and Barwick gave Edgefold victory on the night itself 4-3.
Clay Cross No1 conversely travelled to Edgefold No1 in Group B with the winners getting the prize of home advantage in the quarter finals.
Ian McKay convincingly secured the first frame 48-5 before Tommy Smith equalised.
Graham Jones then came from well adrift to put the visitors into a 2-1 lead though Steve Burton levelled it up again in the next.
A win for Richard Ferguson and Duncan Harwood by a 48-3 margin was followed by another counter blow as McKay and Duncan Waring made it 3-3.
And another great comeback from a difficult looking scoreboard saw Jones and McKay deliver the winning blow on the black with a 38-36 verdict for Clay Cross.
Bolehill No1 qualified as runners up in Group D despite sitting out this round as Tansley Potters' 5-2 defeat of Belper Royal British Legion saw the latter eliminated.
The Nevilles, Joe and Radford soon had the Legionnaires on the backfoot with successive victories and Joe Hawkins added the third before Wayne Shooter with a black ball success pulled one back.
However, with both Nevilles and then both Hawkins teaming up to winning effect, a final frame triumph for Mark Newby and Justin Weller was only academic.
The winners of the Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 - Bolehill No2 clash were also going to secure home advantage in the next knockout stage after both had defeated Crich Comrades.
But with Bolehill poleaxed by two late withdrawals, the home team took the maximum of all seven points.
In the preliminary rounds of the competitions, John Roseman notched breaks of 40 and 27 partnering Mark Bower in the Denis Morton Pairs Handicap despite them being defeated 3-2 by Justin Weller and Steve Bullock, while Duncan Waring had runs of 39 and 35 in his 3-1 singles handicap win over Andrew Haggarty.
