ALFRETON No2 & EDGEFOLD No1 TO LOCK HORNS AGAIN

JAMIE ROWLAND
IT WILL be a case of deja vu when the two teams line up for the Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) final as six red cup finalists Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 and Edgefold Matlock No1 will lock horns again in the final though the Matlock players will be hoping for a better result than last time around.
Both teams emerged from their semi finals with a bit to spare. Edgefold travelled to Crich Comrades and Steven Clark did alot of the damage early doors with a 77-38 success putting the hosts on the back foot.
Making a rare appearance, Chris Taylor edged the next by a single point before Paul Trevett clawed a few points back with a 63-50 success.
But that was as good as it got for the Tramwaymen as Duncan Harwood's 65-51 win gave the visitors a clear cushion going into the final pairs leg where Clark teamed up with Sean Dobney to steer the side home.

Alfreton No 2 faced Alfreton No 1 in the other semi final and were off to a flyer with Ben Monk's 97-55 win before Des Smith and Phil Longden both scored decent margin wins to nudge their team seven points head going into the final two frames.
But Jamie Rowland's 66-37 verdict calmed the nerves for the holders and Monk and Kevin Rowland never had any worries in the concluding doubles leg which they took 72-4.

In the Jimmy Harper Plate (Team Aggregate Consolation) both matches were much more tightly contested.
Edgefold No2 edged out Matlock Golf Club 316-302 to reach the semi final after Roy Taylor took full advantage of a fluked pink to follow up with a stupendous black right down the cushion into the green pocket in the doubles leg to swing the game their way.
In the other first round tie, Tansley Potters defeated Belper Strutt Club 264-254.
Gray Astle's 72-32 success in the fourth frame proved pivotal and despite a hearty effort in the doubles leg from Paul Jarrett and Mark Newby, the hosts clung on to progress.
Tansley's Joe Neville, also successful on the night, enjoyed an excellent week all round as he defeated Alfreton's Jack Lowe 3-0 in the Open Individual Handicap semi final.
Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) semi finals: Crich Comrades 269, Edgefold Matlock No1 321; Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 240, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 330.
Jimmy Harper Plate (Team Aggregate Consolation) first round: Tansley Potters 264, Belper Strutt Club 254; Matlock Golf Club 302, Edgefold Matlock No2 316.
Breaks: B Monk 26,20; W Shooter 25; S Dobney 24.

KEITH IS BACK FROM BRINK TO LAND BILLIARDS SINGLES

KEITH GREGORY
THE LAST remaining billiards final took place this week and saw multiple winner Jim McCann of Whitworth Institute taking on Keith Gregory of Mayfield Institute for the Williams Cup at the Darley Dale venue.
Gregory, who received a 75pts handicap head start soon increased that lead before McCann hit back with a string of solid scoring to eventually seize the advantage and leave himself only 4pts from what seemed a routine victory.
However, one final effort from Gregory saw him drum up a superb unbroken run of 42 to turn the game on its head in one of the most memorable finals in recent times.

Tansley Potters and Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 served up the most thrilling encounter of the week on the snooker side of things, as their re-arranged Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) quarter final went right down to the wire.
Gray Astle and Steve Hawkins put the hosts in pole position going into the concluding doubles leg despite some astute play from Kyle Ryde but, as in the billiards, there was a last gasp turnaround as Ben Monk, who had already struck earlier with a 31 break, cleared up the last few colours to snatch an unlikely victory by just two points.

Tansley were also in T & M Motors Snooker League action as they travelled to Matlock Golf Club and secured a 3-2 win in their second v third clash with new registration Martin Lawrence from the Sheffield League showing his prowess by taking both his singles and doubles legs in barnstorming fashion with the highlight being a break of 51.
Graham Jones continued his excellent form by top scoring for the golfers.

Alfreton No 3 reasserted their position in the final play off place with a 4-1 win against their No 1 team. Jack Lowe was successful in singles and doubles legs for the victors while Andrew Haggarty contributed the only point for the vanquished.

Bolehill's home form continues to be in stark contrast to their results on their travels and they got back to winning ways with a 4-1 defeat of Crich Comrades.
Ricki Slack took pink and black to take a high scoring contest 79-76 in frame three and Ian Birks capitalised in the next with a run of 29.
Cliff Gould had put the Tramwaymen into the ascendancy early doors.

And Belper Strutt Club secured their fourth win in the last five with a 3-2 win at Edgefold No2 with Justin Weller and Roy Taylor top scoring respectively.

League week 15: Matlock Golf Club 2, Tansley Potters 3; Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 1, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No3 4; Bolehill Institute 4, Crich Comrades 1; Edgefold Matlock No2 2, Belper Strutt Club 3.
Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) quarter final: Tansley Potters 279, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 281.
Breaks: M Lawrence 51; B Monk 31,27; I Birks 29; J Wright 20.

Williams Cup (billiards individual handicap) final: Jim McCann (Whitworth) 146, Keith Gregory (Mayfield) 150 (42 break unf).

FINE HAT-TRICK FOR BOLEHILL AT THE THREE-BALL GAME

RICKI SLACK (left) and ANDREW BROUGH of the Bolehill billiards team
THE BOLEHILL INSTITUTE billiards pairing of Ricki Slack and Andrew Brough completed a fine hat-trick in their first full season at the three-ball game as they defeated Jim McCann and Rob Lowe 200-134 at Whitworth Institute to lift the Kenworthy Cup (scotch doubles knockout) to add to recent successes in the Elliott Carpets Billiards League and Captains Cup.
Starting in fluent fashion with a run of 24 and receiving 30 newcomers' handicap for starters, Bolehill looked in a commanding early position but Whitworth came back strongly and got to within ten before the eventual victors pulled away with a run of steady scoring entering the home straight.

In the T & M Motors Snooker League, there were wins for the top three teams who all enjoyed 4-1 victories.
Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 saw off their No 3 team with Ben Monk amassing 91 points in the opener before Jamie Rowland struck the decisive blow with eventually Ady and Jack Lowe notching a late point for their rivals in the doubles leg.

Tansley Potters defeated Alfreton No 1 likewise after Des Smith had given the visitors an early lead but Steve Hawkins and Joe Neville were successful in both singles and doubles to turn the tide.

And also enjoying the same healthy margin of victory were Matlock Golf Club at Edgefold No 1, for whom Sean Dobney notched 99 points in the opening frame with breaks of 29 and 20 before the Golfers took control with Graham Jones and Chris Parker each twice successful.

Edgefold No 2 scored an excellent 3-2 verdict at Crich Comrades, their second in a row, with Roy Taylor and Ryan Spencer delivering on the final black after Rob Mulliss had equalised for the hosts.

And Belper Strutt Club continued their resurgence with a third win in four games, defeating Bolehill Institute 3-2 leaving the latter still without an away win all season in league or cup.
Wayne Shooter top scored for the hosts while Ricki Slack was twice successful for the opposition in tightly fought contests.

GOLF CLUB SUFFER HOME REVERSE TO ALFRETON No1

PHIL LONGDEN
ALFRETON PALMER MOREWOOD No1 scored a fine 3-2 away victory at title challengers Matlock Golf Club as they overturned a 2-1 deficit to bring home the spoils in one of the most exciting fixtures from this week's T & M Motors Snooker League.
Ryan Taylor had them off to a flying start with a 64-26 win in the opener before the golfers hit back strongly with hard-fought wins for Les Mooney and Graham Jones giving them their tenth victories in twelve outings.
However, the Amber Valley cuemen have been showing alot of resolve lately and Phil Longden with a 64-45 success set up a grandstand finish which saw Taylor team up with John Smith to see the visitors home with a 77-47 scoreline.

Leaders Alfreton No 2 edged out Belper Strutt Club 3-2 after falling 0-2 behind to wins for Justin Weller and Wayne Shooter.
However, Andrew Beardsley and Ben Monk (36 break) took each of their singles legs in tight encounters before pairing up to secure the deciding doubles 69-49.

Alfreton No 3 were denied a clean sweep for the Palmer Morewood Club teams however as they fell 4-1 at Edgefold No 2.
Roy Taylor top scored for the hosts while Ady Lowe was the only player to register for the visitors.

And Tansley held second place with a 3-2 home win over Bolehill Institute. Joe Neville and Steve Hawkins took the deciding doubles leg after Joe's son Radford had gotten them off to the best possible start while Simon Zoppi top scored for the vanquished.

Billiards finalists, the two Mayfield players flank the winners from Bolehill Institute:
Keith Gregory, Ricki Slack, Andrew Brough, Mark Jennings.
The Captains Cup final for the billiards was also played with Bolehill Institute doubling up from their league success with a 285-199 verdict over Mayfield Institute.

MONK SETS THE STANDARD AS ALFRETON No2 EDGE WIN

BEN MONK
AFTER a short hiatus for cup games, the T & M Motors Snooker League returned with a full set of fixtures last week and fresh from their six red cup final success, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 continued their good work with a 3-2 win at Bolehill Institute.
Ben Monk (37 break) took the opener in fine style and a stupendous potting display from Andrew Beardsley in the next soon had the visitors in prime position with a 2-0 lead.
Keith Robertson then pulled one back as he took a 67-48 success and Ian Birks then levelled things up with his own verdict of 65-43.
And in an enthralling final doubles frame, just one point separated the pairings with pink and black on the table.
Robertson took the pink but in following through for the black on the bottom cushion, saw the cue ball disappear into the same pocket and eventually Kevin Rowland took a mid range pink to see off the fightback.

Tansley Potters remain second despite a 3-2 reverse at fourth placed Alfreton No3. Radford Neville (22 break) top scored for the visitors but Ady and Jack Lowe took each of their singles and doubles legs to swing things in the Amber Valley cuemen's favour.

Alfreton No 1 also enjoyed the sweet taste of success to complete the hat-trick for the Palmer Morewood teams as they saw off Edgefold No 2 3-2.
John Smith secured the winning leg after brother Des had got them off to a flyer but Roy Taylor and Jamie Wright reduced the arrears to the minimum margin in the concluding doubles match-up.

Matlock Golf Club kept up their challenge towards the upper echelons by defeating Crich Comrades 4-1. Les Mooney and Chris Parker both amassed 73 points as the hosts started in rip-roaring form and it wasn't until the final doubles frame that Cliff Gould and Jack Long got a point on the board for the Tramwaymen.

In the remaining fixture there was a second successive win for Belper Strutt Club, who took the spoils 3-2 at Edgefold No1.
Steve Bullock took the opener on a black ball decider and although James Travis soon levelled, eventually it was Bullock again teaming up with Wayne Shooter who recorded an emphatic 74-12 scoreline to take the match.

In the Elliott Carpets Billiards League, Bolehill Institute's 14-7 win at Tansley Potters gives the pairing of Ricki Slack and Andrew Brough an unassailable advantage at the top despite Mayfield Institute putting in one of the performances of the season in defeating Whitworth Institute 14-5.
Mark Jennings with a run of 41 and Keith Gregory (33 & 30) replied in fine style to Jim McCann's own effort of 33 in a free-flowing spectacular.

ALFRETON ADD ELUSIVE SIX RED PRIZE TO THEIR TALLY

ALFRETON PM No 2 L-R: Ant McMahon, Steve Donner, Jamie Rowland, Andrew Beardsley,
Ben Monk, Kyle Ryde and Kevin Rowland.
ALFRETON PALMER MOREWOOD No 2 lifted the delayed Bob McCartin Six Red Cup final courtesy of a 4-0 defeat of Edgefold No 1 at Crich, for their first ever success in the event, though a couple of the players had previously taken part in teams from Marehay and Ripley which had lifted the silverware in the years of 2013 and 2012.
With Alfreton having won the group stage clash between the pair 7-0 they surely couldn't have expected the same kind of procession this time around but Kyle Ryde's 28 dish down to the black got them off to a rip-roaring start in the opener and Steve Donner quickly followed up to defy his elite players handicap with a 39 clearance for 2-0.
James Travis was in a good position to reduce the arrears in the next but a fluked pink from Ant McMahon took the frame all the way and it was the Amber Valley cuemen who struck a vital blow for 3-0.
With Edgefold a man short, Sean Dobney was drawn out of the hat under the extra handicap rule and was well in contention throughout but ultimately Ben Monk's brown and blue sealed the deal for the victorious reigning league champions.

Meanwhile, the Captains Cup Team Aggregate second round was taking place where Crich Comrades racked up a mammoth 393 points in their defeat of Matlock Golf Club.
Cliff Gould amassed 109 points in frame four which pretty much put the game to bed after Graham Jones has momentarily revived the golfers' fortunes in the third.

And in the other match Alfreton No 1 defeated Belper Strutt Club 303-241 on Hall Street with Des Smith winning each of his singles and doubles legs and Wayne Shooter on target for the visitors.

Keith Gregory (Mayfield) and Jim McCann (Whitworth) will meet in the Williams Cup billiards singles final after each came through their semi in midweek.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup final: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 4, Edgefold Matlock No1 0.
Captains Cup (Team Aggregate): Crich Comrades 393, Matlock Golf Club 277; Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 301, Belper Strutt Club 247.
Breaks: S Donner 39; K Ryde 28; C Parker 23; P Trevett 21.
