CLIFF DELIVERS A GOULD-EN PERFORMANCE FOR CRICH

CLIFF GOULD ... barnstorming form
THE T & M MOTORS SNOOKER LEAGUE returned after a period of cup competitions following the Christmas break and one of the tightest matches saw Crich Comrades No 1 travelling to defeat Bolehill Institute No 2 3-2.
Dan Gould backed up his recent OMYA Cup win over Joe Neville with a 73-42 verdict in the opener and Paul Trevett amassed 91 points with a fine display of matchplay to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards.
Home team captain Mick Bunting pulled one back with a 61-44 victory but the Tramwaymen's Cliff Gould was another in barnstorming form as he delivered a match winning display to secure the spoils 86-15.
Bunting and Neville teamed up to take the final doubles leg on the deciding black to reduce arrears to the minimum margin.

Crich No 2 fell 5-0 to new table toppers Bolehill No 1 as despite runs of 24 and 21 from the Lowes, Jack and Ady respectively, the visitors were in no mood to surrender with Ricki Slack coming from the snooker required stage and Ian Birks contributing his own 24 break en route.

Matlock Golf Club saw off Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 3-2 with last years champs showing their class as Ian McKay (35), Graham Jones (31 & 28) and Les Mooney (29) were amongst the breaks while John Smith was successful in each of his singles and doubles legs.

Belper Strutt Club are in second place after a 3-2 win at Edgefold with Steve Bullock and Duncan Harwood top scoring respectively.

And Alfreton No 2 also kept in contention thanks to a 4-1 win over Whitworth Institute with Ben Monk notching breaks of 30,29, 28 and 27 with Geoff Brailsford registering for the Darley Dale cuemen.

ALFRETON No 1 MARCH ON TO PLAY CRICH No 1 IN SEMIS

DES SMITH .. sparkling form
ALFRETON PALMER MOREWOOD No 1 continue to save their best form for the cup competitions so far this year as they reached the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup semi final courtesy of a win over Edgefold, having lifted the Jimmy Harper Cup pre season in a pre-COVID carry-over.
Des Smith is continuing to produce the goods this time around and he struck first with a 38-14 success before Sean Dobney equalised for the Matlock cuemen.
Andrew Haggarty with confidence brimming from his speed shootout hat-trick success, put the Amber Valley outfit back in front with a 52-7 verdict and then John Smith increased the lead to make it 3-1.
Des Smith and John Smith quickly made the game safe with a scotch doubles break of 25 to boot before the last two scotch doubles legs went to the away team but to no avail as the hosts ran out 4-3 winners.

There were also two Captains Cup games, with Edgefold again featuring this time against Belper Strutt Club but despite breaks from Sean Dobney (38 and 24) they fell to a 349-257 defeat against another Amber Valley outfit in the total aggregate competition.
Steve Bullock had his own break of 25 while Justin Weller amassed 91 points in their march to victory.

And Bolehill Institute No 2 are also through after a 312-259 defeat of Whitworth Institute. It wasn't looking great for the hosts when Peter Lee and Mick Ferguson both struck to put the visitors 57 ahead after a couple of frames but Keith Robertson and Mick Bunting took each of their singles frames (with the former scoring 90 points) before combining to great effect in the doubles leg

Top breaks in the competitions were Ben Monk's 49 in the OMYA Cup and Keith Robertson's 41 in the Denis Morton Trophy as another week of competitive action came to a close.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup quarter final: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 4, Edgefold Matlock 3.
Captains Cup first round: Edgefold Matlock 257, Belper Strutt Club 349; Bolehill Institute No 2 312, Whitworth Institute 259.
Breaks: B Monk 49; K Robertson 41; S Dobney 38,24; S Bullock 25; D Smith / J Smith 25 (scotch doubles).

BELPER STRUTT CLUB CONTINUE SIX RED LOVE AFFAIR

SHANE MILES ... winning debut
BELPER STRUTT CLUB continued their love affair with the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup when they reached their fourth final in five seasons, courtesy of a 4-2 home victory over Bolehill Institute No 1.
With the quarter-final between Alfreton No 1 and Edgefold postponed for a third time due to COVID issues, Crich No 1 are still waiting to see who their semi-final opponents will be but the Strutt cuemen will prove a tough nut to crack for whoever they come up against on the big day itself.

Bolehill struck first on Campbell Street with Colin Marchington continuing his decent form this season by grinding out a 27-10 victory but debutant Shane Miles, fresh from his George Mills Trophy success on shootout night, levelled the scores with a storming long pink settling the issue in his favour 49-33.

The visitors again edged ahead with Simon Zoppi securing a 48-25 verdict but again it was all square as Justin Weller took pink and black to take a nail-biter in frame four.

Ultimately, that proved a pivotal moment as Weller and partner Steve Bullock looked to be racing away with the first of the scotch doubles legs until a fluked green by Marchington set up a grandstand finish with perfect position to take all the remaining colours bar the black which was close to the bottom cushion.

But from a very difficult position with the cue ball in the jaws of the pocket, the rally came to an abrupt halt with the black jawing and double kissing to leave a simple tap in for which Weller was very grateful.

And it was soon all over as Miles teamed up with Mark Newby for an emphatic success in the sixth frame in which they were always in total control.

In the OMYA Cup, previous winners Ben Monk, Sean Dobney and Ricki Slack were amongst the breaks as they progressed to the next round with varying degrees of difficulty.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup semi final: Belper Strutt Club 4, Bolehill Institute No 1 2.
Breaks: S Dobney 44,37,22,22; B Monk 44,38,32; R Slack 36,23,21;
D Harwood 28; K Robertson 25; G Jones 25,22.

DUNCAN TAKES MIDNIGHT SHOOTOUT AT STRUTT CLUB

DUNCAN HARWOOD (champ) and WAYNE SHOOTER (r-up)
A RECORD-BREAKING TURNOUT at Belper Strutt Club saw 26 players competing for the Christmas Snooker Shootout which was back on the T & M Motors Snooker League calendar after an enforced years absence.
With such a huge number of participants, contests fluctuated between six-red and a reduced three-red format in order to get the large number of matches completed during the evening, and the final ball hit the back of the pocket at around 12.05am.
The singles individual event, the Alan Hopkinson Trophy, saw three Edgefold players contesting the semi finals and it was Duncan Harwood who took home the silverware, courtesy of his victory over Strutt Club's very own Wayne Shooter in the resulting midnight shootout.
Duncan had been runner-up previously in 2016 and came through earlier battles with Keith Robertson, Sean Dobney and James Travis.

PAUL JARRETT (r-up) with ANDREW HAGGARTY (hat-trick hero)
Winner in that year, Alfreton's Andrew Haggarty had his own cause to celebrate as he racked up a fantastic hat-trick of wins in the Eddie Lomas Trophy speed snooker event, showing a dazzling turn of foot to see off allcomers including home club player Paul Jarrett in the final.
Andrew had previously taken the honours in both 2016 and 2017 and with Des Smith scoring in 2019, Alfreton cuemen have now taken four of the last five runnings of the event. They must be running secret keep fit classes in the back rooms of Palmer Morewood Club!!
Also catching the eye with his fleet of foot was the Golf Club's Les Mooney who certainly showed he can still get from A to B in double-quick time to put up a great showing against some of his more youthful opponents.

SHANE MILES and KEITH ROBERTSON, pairs winners
And finally the George Mills Trophy went to Bolehill's Keith Robertson who partnered Shane Miles of Alfreton to victory against Steve Bullock and Steven Clark in the final, having earlier seen off Rob Muxlow and Scott Woodall, and Ian McKay and Mooney in earlier rounds.
Ironically Shane was a guest of final opponent Steve Bullock, having met through playing for another league team, and took to the unique scotch doubles format like a natural.

Thanks to Belper Strutt Club for hosting and to everyone that came along to make it a great event, it just remains to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hopefully we can start up on schedule in the first week of January, all the best.
Alan Hopkinson Trophy (six red snooker handicap): winner, Duncan Harwood (Edgefold); runner-up, Wayne Shooter (Belper Strutt Club).
Eddie Lomas Trophy (speed snooker handicap): winner, Andrew Haggarty (Alfreton Palmer Morewood); runner-up, Paul Jarrett (Belper Strutt Club).
George Mills Trophy (six red scotch doubles handicap): winners, Keith Robertson (Bolehill Institute) and Shane Miles (Belper Strutt); runners-up, Steve Bullock (Belper Strutt Club) and Steven Clark (Edgefold).

BOLEHILL No 1, STRUTT CLUB AND CRICH No 1 INTO SEMIS

ANDREW BROUGH...twice successful
FOCUS moved onto the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup Quarter Finals this week with three of the four matches going ahead as scheduled and the tightest game saw Bolehill Institute No 1 come through a cliffhanger against Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 on the final black.
Ben Monk struck first for the visitors with a colours clearance of 27 to take the opener before a closely contested frame saw Ricki Slack equalise for the hosts.
Andrew Brough put in a fine display to edge Bolehill ahead with a 40-12 verdict before Alfreton pulled themselves level thanks to Kevin Rowland's long-range double on the black which actually turned out to be the perfect treble!
Monk and Andrew Beardsley then took the opening scotch doubles leg again on the black before Brough struck again, partnering Ian Birks for a decisive win to take the match into the deciding leg.
And with Birks and Slack racing into a 29-0 lead, prospects looked bleak for the Amber Valley cuemen until a fantastic rearguard action saw them gradually pull the scores level with just the black on the table.
An exciting battle was finally decided when Slack took an all-or-nothing shot down the cushion at dead weight which dropped into what is often described as the "tightest pocket on the table" by those in the know, much to the relief of the home team.

Belper Strutt Club saw off Matlock Golf Club 5-2 in a pre-cursor to the much delayed Jaeger Cup final from the previous season as  they took control by taking all three scotch doubles legs.
The golfers had earlier gone 2-0 up through Ian McKay and Les Mooney but Wayne Shooter and Justin Weller were the catalysts for the turnaround.

And Crich No 1 emphatically took the battle of the Comrades Club with a clean sweep of all seven frames as Ade Smith and Nick Berry won all three frames they contested.
Bob McCartin Six Red Cup quarter finals: Bolehill Institute No 1 4, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 3; Matlock Golf Club 2, Belper Strutt Club 5; Crich Comrades No 2 0, Crich Comrades No 1 7.
Breaks: K Robertson 36; B Monk 29,27; D Smith 28; D Harwood 21; R Slack / I Birks 20 (scotch dbls).
