KEITH HITS RECORD TALLY AS MAYFIELD REACH SUMMIT

KEITH GREGORY, highest individual tally
MAYFIELD INSTITUTE hit the summit of the Elliott Carpets Billiards League for the first time as they defeated Tansley Potters 16-10 to go a point ahead of erstwhile leaders Bolehill Institute with the two teams due to meet twice over the next fortnight.
Keith Gregory seems to be finding his mojo of late as he amassed the seasons highest individual score of 223 in the opener helped along the way by an excellent run of 33.
Mark Jennings added the icing on the cake with a 143-104 victory in the other leg to give the home side their fourth victory from six games.
Bolehill came unstuck at Whitworth Institute for the second time in as many weeks after a Captains Cup defeat to the same opposition.
Rob Lowe trailed for most of the game until taking the lead in the last minute of the match and running out a 125-121 victor on the final scoresheet.
The second leg was in the balance until Jim McCann (35 & 34 breaks) pulled away near the end and with some confusion on the scoreboard clouding the final stages, he recorded a 154-91 success for an overall 13-7 verdict to the hosts.

Back in the Elliott Carpets Billiards League only three matches took place with the top two teams meeting as Edgefold No1 entertained Bolehill.
Colin Marchington took a nip and tuck opener on the pink before Tommy Smith took a black ball victory in the next to equalise.
Steve Burton (25 break) took an eighth win in nine to make it 2-1 before Ian Birks (24 break) levelled it up again.
In the end the Matlock side maintained their unbeaten run as Burton (25 break) and Smith continued their decent form on the night to comfortably take the doubles decider.

Edgefold No2 also tasted victory with a 4-1 defeat of Belper Royal British Legion on Campbell Street. Trevor Wright pulled off a fine success in the opener as he withstood a fiery start from Justin Weller (36 break) to take the spoils 79-51 and despite Steve Bullock equalising with a black ball win in the next, the visitors held sway for the rest of the night.
Scott Brooks and Rob Thompson both edged tight contests before the latter teamed up with Wright successfully to embellish a great evenings work.

Crich Comrades took a 3-2 win from Edgefold No3 in the other game, Jack Long and Nick Berry soon having them two to the good before Sam Kniveton pulled one back.
Martyn Dranfield make the game safe however before Fin Harvey and Reece Johnstone took a convincing doubles success to reduce the overall arrears.

In the competitions Justin Weller notched a superb 50 break in his 3-1 win in the Open Individual Handicap while Ian McKay took a high quality game with Paul Trevett 3-1 in the "B" Handicap with breaks of 33 and 35 being recorded respectively.

EDGEFOLD No1 CONTINUE TO PUT RIVALS TO THE SWORD

RICHARD FERGUSON set the ball rolling for EDGEFOLD No1
JUST ONE MATCH was played in the first round of the Captains Cup Team Aggregate competition with the other game falling foul to a burst water pipe at Belper Royal British Legion but it was business as usual for league leaders and six red cup finalists Edgefold No1 as they defeated Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 to move into the second stage.
Richard Ferguson, who has been in outstanding form this season, put them firmly on the front foot from the start with a 90-29 success and with the doubles being played second up on agreement between the players, he stayed on the table to team up with young Tommy Smith for an 81-42 verdict, leaving the Matlock side sitting pretty.
Rob Muxlow (22 and 20 breaks) took the next 64-49 and although Cole Smith confirmed his status as one of the most promising youngsters locally with an 84-58 win, the game was well beyond the reach of the visitors by the time John Smith pulled up stumps against Duncan Harwood. The home team taking the spoils 349-253.

Bolehill Institute played their re-arranged T & M Motors Snooker League game with Crich Comrades (having been called off for snow prior to Christmas) and took a 3-2 victory to go second but are still four points adrift of the aforementioned league leaders.
Ian Doe got the better of a tight tactical battle in the opener to edge it 54-45 and Ricki Slack increased the lead with a 76-54 success in the next.
A lightning fast third frame was nip and tuck until Jack Long took it on the pink 48-38 to pull one back for the Tramwaymen but Ian Birks (20 break) sealed the deal in the next 64-20 before Nick Berry and Long combined well to take the remaining doubles leg 62-32.

Best performance of the week's competition play was probably Clay Cross duo Graham Jones and Ian McKay's noteworthy 3-0 success at Alfreton Palmer Morewood to progress to the quarter finals of the Denis Morton Pairs Handicap knockout.

In the Billiards Captains Cup Team Aggregate event, there were wins for Mayfield Institute and Whitworth Institute who now meet in the final.
Keith Gregory notched breaks of 35 and 30 and Mark Jennings was also successful as Mayfield ran up an excellent 425-250 success while there was a closer encounter at Darley Dale where Bolehill fell to a 272-251 defeat.
Ricki Slack gave the visitors a five point advantage from his leg, but this was overturned by probably Rob Lowe's best performance of the season so far to tilt the game in the hosts' favour.

Snooker Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) first round: Edgefold Matlock No1 349, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 253; Belper RBL v Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 postponed.
T & M Motors Snooker League: Bolehill Institute 3, Crich Comrades 2.
Breaks: R Muxlow 22,20; I Birks 20.

Billiards Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) semi finals: Mayfield Institute 425, Tansley Potters 250; Whitworth Institute 272, Bolehill Institute 251.
Breaks: K Gregory 35,30.

ALFRETON PM No2 AND EDGEFOLD No1 REACH CUP FINAL

JACK LOWE
THE SEMI FINALS of the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup got the team snooker underway for 2025 and Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 entertained Tansley Potts in the first of them on Hall Street.
Steve Donner took the opener 66-28 after opponent Joe Neville went out of sequence after taking a free ball and the home player needed so second invitation to wrap up victory.
Ben Monk then dominated the next frame with a 31-5 success to freeze Tansley danger man Martin Lawrence out of the game with a 31-5 success.
A tight frame then ensued but went the way of the Amber Valley outfit with Jack Lowe taking it 28-17 and victory was complete in straight frames when Carlos Zaragoza added the next 42-30.
The doubles were then academic, but Lawrence and Neville eventually got the visitors on the board although Andrew Beardsley and youngster Alfie Richardson took the other one on the black with the remaining frame conceded.

Edgefold No1 continued their rampant league form into the cup as they took all six frames contested from Clay Cross Brotherhood.
Richard Ferguson and Rob Muxlow took the opening frames with a bit to spare before a close encounter saw Duncan Harwood edge frame three with a 35-24 verdict.
Steve Burton made sure of victory in the next with a comfortable success and then further wins in the doubles legs put the icing on the cake with the Matlock side booking their place in the final to play Alfreton No2.

Highlight of the competitions was an excellent break of 38 from Joe Neville in the Williams Cup billiards singles first round as he took the scalp of Whitworth Institute maestro Jim McCann with a superb all round performance at Tansley. Also the previous week Lee Hage notched three breaks of thirty plus as he moved into the next round of the Open Individual Handicap.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup, semi finals: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 6, Tansley Potters 1; Clay Cross Brotherhood 0, Edgefold Matlock No1 6.

IAN GOES ONE BETTER IN ALL CLAY CROSS SINGLES FINAL

IAN McKAY  - Alan Hopkinson Trophy winner 2024
A RECORD-BREAKING 29 players took part in the 2024 Christmas Shootout event held at Matlock's Edgefold Club with the fantastic turnout meaning first round matches were played with three reds before moving onto six reds in the rounds thereafter.

The Alan Hopkinson Trophy (individual handicap) is the flagship event of the evening and Ian McKay of Clay Cross Brotherhood went one better than in 2018 when he represented Matlock Golf Club in the final by getting the better of team-mate Lee Hage  to lift the trophy.
Ian defeated the two Smiths, Tommy and John in the first two rounds before seeing off danger man Steve Donner in the quarter final and Steve Bullock in the semis on a night where he found a consistent high level of form all the way through. Lee put up a great showing on this first try at this event.
Best recorded breaks were 35 from Steve Donner and 25 from Reece Johnstone.
RICKI SLACK and JACK LOWE with the George Mills Trophy
The George Mills Trophy (scotch doubles handicap) saw players drawn out of the hat at random so participants from different clubs team up together and it was Ricki Slack (Bolehill Institute) and Jack Lowe (Alfreton Palmer Morewood) who emerged victorious as they overcame Des Smith (also Alfreton PM) and Steve Hawkins (Tansley Potters) in the final.
It was a case of improving round by round as they got past Reece Johnstone and Ben Christon, Steve Bullock and Sean Dobney, and then Trevor Wright and Rob Muxlow in the semi final.
Ricki is a second time winner, having triumphed in 2019 partnering Wayne Shooter and finishing as a runner-up last year, while its a first success in the event for Jack.
REECE JOHNSTON with the Eddie Lomas Trophy
The Eddie Lomas Trophy is a speed knockout which features head to head contests of clearing the colours, with certain handicaps meaning a player may either have two balls extra or two balls less to pot.
Andrew Haggarty was bidding for a fifth win in the event, but he fell in the semi finals to young Reece Johnstone, who produced a magnificent effort to lift the prize at his first attempt.
Tommy Smith, his final opponent and another promising youngster, had also looked impressive throughout but in the final it was Reece who came through to become the youngest ever winner.
In earlier rounds he had a bye (first round), then defeated Sean Dobney and Phil Leverton to reach the semis.

Thanks to all who came to make it the night it was, thanks also to the Edgefold Club for hosting, to the two Duncans, Harwood and Waring for providing food on the evening and Des Smith for running a raffle to boost the prize fund.

Alan Hopkinson Trophy (six reds individual handicap): winner, Ian McKay (Clay Cross Brotherhood), runner-up, Lee Hage (Clay Cross Brotherhood).
George Mills Trophy (six reds scotch doubles handicap): winners, Ricki Slack (Bolehill Institute) and Jack Lowe (Alfreton Palmer Morewood); runners-up, Des Smith (Alfreton Palmer Morewood) and Steve Hawkins (Tansley Potters).
Eddie Lomas Trophy (speed snooker individual handicap): winner, Reece Johnstone (Edgefold Club); runner-up, Tommy Smith (Edgefold Club).
Breaks: S Donner 35; R Johnstone 25; R Slack / J Lowe 24.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS IN SIX RED QF KNOCKOUTS

DUNCAN WARING ... 40 break
IT WAS DEFINITELY A CASE OF HOME COMFORTS in the quarter finals of the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup with all four teams on home baize progressing to the last four, mostly with a bit to spare as the T & M Motors Snooker League took a break from the regular programme.
Clay Cross Brotherhood and Bolehill Institute met on Broadleys and the home team were off to an absolute flyer going 3-0 up in less than half an hour.
Ian McKay and Graham Jones were in scintillating form, hardly missing a ball as they restricted their opponents to nine points between them with 54-5 and 37-4 verdicts.
With away players still in transit after the express start, the pair then teamed up for the first of the scotch doubles and started and finished the frame strongly with a run of 22 early doors and then a yellow to blue mop up ensuring-victory, This time the Bolehill pairing remained competitive in-between but ultimately to no avail.
Simon Zoppi continued his decent start to the season by pulling one back with a 52-14 success but Duncan Waring's superb 40 break put the game to bed in the next for a 4-1 lead.
The visitors took each of the remaining (but academic) scotch doubles encounters to put a respectable tinge on the final scoreline at 4-3 and Ian Birks and Zoppi took some consolation with the highest pairs break so far of 28 (a missed pink preventing what looked likely to be a 41 clearance at one stage).

Elsewhere, Edgefold No1 (technically at home as first out of the bag) saw off the challenge of their No2 team 4-3 with the early frames shared between Richard Ferguson and Sean Thompson.
Rob Muxlow and Steve Burton then nudged the league leaders 3-1 ahead, the latter with a pivotal black ball decider.
Two more black ballers followed with Thompson and Josh Dakin pulling one back before Burton and Ferguson's 36-31 cliffhanger sealed the deal - the arrears were reduced once again in the academic last leg.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 defeated six red specialists Belper Royal British Legion 6-1 with Jack Lowe (27 break) and Carlos Zaragoza (21 break) winning each of their singles and doubles legs with Mark Newby getting the sole reply for the Legionnaires.

And Tansley Potters also hit Crich Comrades for six after Jack Long had taken the first for the Tramwaymen on the black.
Martin Lawrence (41 break) has proved a very dangerous reserve to have in their locker and his fourth frame victory put them on the cusp of victory before Steve and Joe Hawkins made sure in the first of the scotch doubles with a 41-25 triumph.

Ben Monk continued his flying form of late as he ran in breaks of 60,59,46,37 and 29 to progress to the second round of the Open Individual Handicap.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup, quarter finals: Clay Cross Brotherhood 4, Bolehill Institute 3; Edgefold Matlock No1 4, Edgefold Matlock No2 3; Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 6, Belper Royal British Legion 1; Tansley Potters 6, Crich Comrades 1.

BEN STARS IN ONE OF BEST MATCHES IN LEAGUE HISTORY

BEN MONK ... 84 break
ONE OF the highest quality games in the history of the T & M Motors Snooker League took place last week as Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 entertained undefeated leaders Edgefold No1 and it produced a feast of snooker with some scintillating break-making from both teams.
Jack Lowe (22 break) took the opener in fine style 67-23 but this proved to be just the appetiser for what was to come and then Steve Donner (35 break) and Richard Ferguson (33 break) exchanged excellent runs in the next but it was the latter who came out on top 91-60 for his sixth win in seven.
Even this was the pre cursor for the show stopper of the evening as Ben Monk (84 break) turned in a stupendous performance and came very close to notching a fourth century in league and competition matchplay, potting an excellent yellow only for his cannon on the green to go slightly too far down the table. A double could not quite keep the break going sadly but still a monumental effort.
Steve Burton levelled again for the visitors at 2-2 and then got in on the heavy scoring himself with a superb run of 49 in the deciding doubles leg to give the Matlock cuemen the spoils by the minimum margin.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 edged into second place on the most wins rule as they took a 3-2 win from Edgefold No2.
Des Smith, Andrew Haggarty and Phil Longden reeled off the first three frames before Trevor Wright took each of his singles and doubles legs, latterly partnering captain Scott Brooks.

Bolehill Institute remain in contention after a 3-2 home win over Tansley Potters. Ian Doe and Colin Marchington took each of the opening contests before a great clearance out of nowhere on blue, pink and black in the next from Joe Hawkins reduced the arrears.
With the doubles leg played next due to a player still in transit, Steve Hawkins' run of 21 straight after a foul proved crucial and although the home pairing obtained the required snooker, Joe Neville dispatched an excellent pink to level things up.
A very tight tactical battle took place in the decider and eventually Ian Birks edged it with a couple of crucial teen breaks late on deciding the issue.

Belper Royal British Legion have clicked into gear after a slow start and their 4-1 win at Edgefold No3 was their third in a row. Justin Weller top scored and teamed up with Mark Newby to take the doubles leg after Kieran Worsley had equalised for the hosts early doors.

Crich Comrades scored an excellent 3-2 success over Clay Cross Brotherhood with Nick Berry giving the Tramwaymen an early advantage with a 60-35 verdict.
Graham Jones and Tony Blant nudged the visitors ahead thereafter but Ade Smith's first register of the season saw the match squared up.
And in the concluding pairs leg, Paul Trevett and Jack Long edged it on the final black 52-46 after a thrilling contest.

In the competitions, Lee Hage notched a 39 break en route to qualifying for the second round of the OMYA Cup scratch event while Duncan Harwood was unluckiest player as he was narrowly defeated on the final black in both that event and the individual handicap too.

Just one contest in the Elliott Carpets Billiards League which saw Whitworth Institute triumph 12-9 over Mayfield Institute. Jim McCann (37 break) and Rob Lowe (scoring his first victory of the season) both edged very tight contests which could have gone either way.
