EDGEFOLD No3 STUN THEIR No1 TEAM COUNTERPARTS

ROY TAYLOR ... singles and doubles wins
EDGEFOLD No3 stunned their illustrious counterparts and consecutive league champions Edgefold No1 in the all-Matlock club derby as they came from behind to secure a 3-2 verdict in the T & M Motors Snooker League.
Robert Muxlow had put his team ahead with a 69-36 scoreline in the opener but excellent wins for Conrad Spencer (57-40) and Roya Taylor (63-40) turned the game on its head soon afterwards.
Tommy Smith equalised to make it 2-2 but Taylor and Spencer confirmed their fine form on the evening as they combined splendidly for a 72-31 success and the overall victory.

Another tight game saw Alfreton No1 overcome Clay Cross No2 3-2, with the match also going down to the final doubles leg where John and Cole Smith put in a stellar performance to seal an 80-25 success.
John had earlier levelled after brother Des had taken the opener on the black before Mark Bower and Andrew Bailey had temporarily put the home side into the ascendancy.

There was a tighter deciding leg on School Lane as Bolehill No1 edged out Crich Comrades 3-2 as Ricki Slack and Ian Birks took the pairs leg on the pink for a 67-53 triumph.
Colin Marchington had taken the opener for his ninth win in eleven but Paul Trevett's superb pot into a baulk pocket levelled on the black  and then John Magill's equally impressive yellow to pink pot-fest from unlikely angles saw them in front at 2-1.
Ian Birks calmed the storm however as Bolehill surged back in the remaining singles and doubles.

Belper Royal British Legion took a 3-2 win from Bolehill No2 but not before Dale Shaw took the first frame 67-66.
However, the next three singles legs all went the way of the visitors courtesy of Paul Jarrett, Wayne Shooter and Mark Newby before Mick Bunting and Paul Young edged a tight pairs frame at the end.

At the top of the table, there were good wins for both Edgefold No2 and Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2.
The Matlock side extended their lead slightly to six points as they took a maximum haul off hitherto third placed Tansley Potters with Reece Johnstone, who had notched breaks of 55,47 and 37 in a recent individual match, continuing in the same vein with a break of 35, and making him the obvious Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week.
Josh Dakin top scored on the night where Tansley struggled to get any kind of foothold in a 5-0 defeat.

Alfreton No2 saw off Clay Cross No1 4-1 with Adam Cupit the star turn with breaks of 38 and 32 while contesting singles and doubles legs.
Young Kai Hopkins had given the hosts the lead with a 64-24 win while the visitors had to wait until the fourth frame before Duncan Waring registered with a hard fought 79-63 verdict.

In the  Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League, Whitworth Institute were involved in two close matches, as they tied 10-10 with Mayfield Institute before being edged out 9-8 at Bolehill Institute.
The former game saw all four players amongst the breaks, with Mark Jennings' superb 51 the best of them despite him tasting defeat to Rob Lowe (32 break) on the night. Keith Gregory and Jim Mcann also had runs of 34 and 32 respectively.
In the second match McCann reeled off breaks of 49,48 and 33.

Meanwhile, Mayfield Institute progressed to the final of the Captains Cup (Billiards) as they defeated Tansley Potters by a decisive margin.

EDGEFOLD No2 QUICKLY BACK IN THE GROOVE IN LEAGUE

MARTIN BARWICK
THE T & M MOTORS SNOOKER LEAGUE sprung back into action following the Christmas and competition breaks, and Edgefold No2 were quickly back into winning ways with a 3-2 home victory over Belper Royal British Legion.

Mark Newby secured the opener on the black for the Legionnaires but Reece Johnstone (21 break) equalised before Martin Barwick with a 60-12 verdict put the home side ahead.
Scott Brooks took the next 72-37 to ensure overall success before Newby and Steve Bullock took a tight doubles frame to reduce the arrears.
Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 and Tansley Potters lie joint second at the half-way stage, five points behind the leaders but both have a game in hand after the teams had contrasting fortunes this week.
Tansley defeated Edgefold No3 4-1 with Joe Neville suffering his first league defeat after Roy Taylor came from needing two snookers at one stage to snatch it on the black but Radford Neville amassed 99 points in the next and the Hawkins, Joe and Steve, also hit back strongly for 3-1.
The pairs also went the way of the hosts with Neville (R) and Hawkins (S) doing the business.
The all-Alfreton derby went the way of the No1 team, who defeated their higher-placed No2 counterparts 3-2.
Brothers Des and John Smith soon had their side 2-0 ahead with scorelines of 72-60 and 76-43 respectively before Jack Lowe and Ben Monk pulled their side level at 2-2.
However, the in-form Smith duo were back to take the doubles leg 73-37 and upset the title challengers.
Bolehill No1 won 3-2 at Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 with Colin Marchington and Ricki Slack (24 break) putting them two up before John Roseman (29 break) pulled one back.
Ian Doe made it 3-1 with Callum Greenfield having some cursed luck with several unforeseen in-offs before Roseman (Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored player of the week) and Andrew Bailey reduced the deficit in the doubles leg.
Crich Comrades upset last season's champs Edgefold No1 3-2 with Nick Berry and Paul Hubbard each scoring convincing wins before Rob Muxlow and Duncan Harwood pulled the Matlock side level.
However, Berry and Hubbard continued their excellent form in the pairs contest, taking the frame by 80-34.
The other contest saw Clay Cross Brotherhood No1 overcome Bolehill No2 3-2 with Graham Jones in fine form, notching breaks of 25,22 and 22 as well as amassing 98 points in his singles leg.
Dale Shaw and Mick Bunting were successful for the vanquished but Jones teamed up with Tony Blant to seal the deal in the doubles after Ian McKay, playing a second frame under the extra handicap due to player shortages, had levelled at 2-2.
In the Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League, Tansley Potters defeated Whitworth Institute 11-7 with Joe Neville notching a run of 34 and Steve Hawkins also successful.
T & M Motors Snooker League week 11: Edgefold Matlock No2 3, Belper Royal British Legion 2; Tansley Potters 4, Edgefold Matlock No3 1; Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 2, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 3; Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 2, Bolehill Institute No1 3; Crich Comrades 3, Edgefold Matlock No1 2; Bolehill Institute No2 2, Clay Cross Brotherhood No1 3.

FOUR TEAMS PROGRESS IN EMPHATIC FASHION IN CUP

COLE SMITH, convincing win
THERE were some outstanding performances in the opening round of the Captains Cup Team Aggregate knockout competition with all four victorious teams scoring quite wide-margin victories with Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1's 306-233 defeat of Belper Royal British Legion actually proving the tightest of some not-so-tight ties!
That was still largely due to a 54-28 doubles victory from Wayne Shooter and Mark Newby when they trailed by 99 points in the final frame however, so its safe to say the home team were not overly sweating on the outcome.
Steve Bullock had given the visitors the advantage with a 48-32 verdict in the opener, but John Smith (80-52), Cole Smith (93-29) and Andrew Haggarty (73-50) all ran up big scores to put the home team well in the driving seat and on the road to ultimate victory.

Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 scored an excellent win as they took all five frames off last season's league champions Edgefold No1 and thus a 364-260 aggregate victory overall.
Callum Greenfield secured the opening frame 71-46 and then Andrew Bailey repeated his recent singles knockout win over Duncan Harwood, this time 86-53.
Matt Large took a tight third frame 67-55 and by the time John Roseman (25 break) sealed the fourth 68-45 the writing was on the wall.
Roseman then teamed up with Lee Shaw to complete the nap hand in the concluding doubles frame by  a narrow margin.

There was some high scoring in the contest between Bolehill No1 and Tansley Potters, with the visitors overturning a large deficit in the opening frame to run out comfortable winners at close of play.
Ian Doe was in fine form first up as he fired in a 90-22 salvo which was replied to in like for like fashion by Radford Neville in the next, compiling an excellent 38 break en route to his own 84-27 success and earning him the Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week mantle.
Joe Hawkins then delivered his biggest ever win in his short league career to turn the tables quite dramatically in the next with a 97-18 victory that was always going to be hard to come back from.
Father Steve continued the momentum by taking the last four balls for a 73-34 win and despite a black ball win for the hosts in the doubles leg, it was academic by then with Tansley triumphant overall 329-226.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 saw off Crich Comrades 330-256 on School Lane with young debutant Kai Hopkins getting the ball rolling in fine style with a 75-56 win.
Carlos Zaragoza ramped up the pressure with a 68-23 success but John Magill then pulled the hosts back into the contest with a 68-38 riposte.
However Jack Lowe's 74-45 scoreline steadied the ship and he then teamed up with Paul Sainsbury to make sure with a 75-64 doubles success.

Just one match in the Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League saw Bolehill Institute defeat Mayfield Institute (for whom Keith Gregory notched runs of 39 and 31) 11-8.

Captains Cup (Team Aggregate) first round: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 306 Belper Royal British Legion 233; Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 364 Edgefold Matlock No1 260; Bolehill Institute No1 226 Tansley Potters 329; Crich Comrades 256 Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 330.

BREAKS GALORE WITH JACK LOWE'S 81 TOPPING THE BILL

JACK LOWE ... personal record break
THERE were breaks galore as players used the holiday period to ramp up practice and produce some of the most prolific scoring of the year in the associated competitions running alongside the league.
Top of the pile was a magnificent 81 from Jack Lowe of Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 in edging out team-mate Carlos Zaragoza in the singles handicap, comfortably his highest in competitive play and vindicating the rapid improvement he has made since the end of last season, having already overtaken his winning tally for the entire season before half-way this time around.
The Bob McCartin Six Red Cup saw a semi final and the remaining quarter final played out to start the new year and it is Edgefold No1 who await their final opposition in the final after defeating Tansley Potters 4-1.
Richard Ferguson took the opener 45-33 and although Radford Neville equalised on the black, wins for Duncan Harwood and Steve Burton put the Matlock side on the cusp of victory.
And Ferguson teamed up with Rob Muxlow to seal the deal on the black in the first of scotch doubles legs, before an academic win for the visitors reduced the arrears to 4-2.

Still playing their quarter final round were Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 who entertained Bolehill No1, and the visitors looked in good nick, leading 3-1 after the conclusion of the singles legs.
Des Smith put the hosts into an early lead but wins for Colin Marchington, Ricki Slack and Simon Zoppi soon turned things around.
However,  Cole Smith laid a great snooker on pink in the first of the scotch doubles to set up victory, then potted match ball in the next before seeing Phil Longden slam in a fabulous long black in the decider with everything resting on it for a 4-3 comeback win.
The home team's tremendous battling spirit thus saw them taking pink and black to win each of the pairs legs in ultra-tight finishes and earn a trip to Clay Cross Brotherhood No1 in the semis.

There was also one T & M Motors Snooker League clash, but it was a big one with Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 defeating leaders Edgefold No2 3-2 meaning they now sit just four points adrift in second place with a game in hand.
Paul Sainsbury convincingly took the opener 71-37 though Scott Brooks levelled in similar tone with a 72-45 riposte.
Leading 45-0 early doors, Martin Barwick then inflicted the first league defeat on man of the moment Jack Lowe but only on the final black after a thrilling comeback fell just short 77-70.
Lowe was then drawn out to play again with the hosts a man down and he put his table time to good use to earn a 101-25 success and level at 2-2.
And it was Lowe (who on balance receives the Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week mantle) and Sainsbury who steered the home side's ship home as they secured a 64-31 win in the deciding pairs frame.

In the Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League, Bolehill Institute narrowly defeated Whitworth Institute 10-9 with wins for Jim McCann and Ricki Slack respectively.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup, semi final: Edgefold Matlock No1 4, Tansley Potters 1; quarter final: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 4, Bolehill Institute No1 3.
T & M Motors Snooker League: Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 3, Edgefold Matlock No2 2.

Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week: Jack Lowe (Alfreton PM No2).

ANDREW THE SHOOTOUT SPECIALIST STRIKES YET AGAIN!

ANDREW HAGGARTY ... speed king
CLAY CROSS BROTHERHOOD took centre stage as a new venue for the annual Christmas Shootout night but as sure as night follows day, again it was Alfreton Palmer Morewood's Andrew Haggarty who confirmed himself as the ultimate Yuletide specialist by taking the Eddie Lomas Trophy for an incredible FIFTH time as well as lifting the Alan Hopkinson Trophy for a second time, having also done the same double back in 2016.

An excellent turnout of 26, only two short of last season's record breaking entry, convened upon Broadleys for the trio of quickfire handicap knockout competitions, comprising of six red singles and scotch doubles handicaps and the popular speed test of clearing of the colours in head to head rounds (also handicapped).
Andrew Haggarty was clear favourite beforehand for the speed event having already tasted glory in 2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022 and his chances were enhanced after receiving a bye in the opening round with his opponent having to leave early (maybe he had heard of his reputation!)
After this wins over Ricki Slack, John Smith and Jack Lowe saw him to the final against  Alfreton No2's Paul Sainsbury, who himself had come through with flying colours defeating Brian Fullard, John Roseman, Ian McKay and Callum Greenfield.
But in the final showdown, experience counted and the cool approach of Haggarty won the day with something to spare, making it a fantastic nap hand in the event as the owls began to hoot Christmas tunes outside.
The victor was already floating on cloud nine, having taking the main singles event earlier in the evening, where he came up against local favourite Lee Hage in the final.
Haggarty had defeated Reece Johnstone, Duane Parsons and Matt Large to reach the big stage after receiving a first round bye while opponent Hage had come through against John Smith, Duncan Harwood, Rob Muxlow and Steve Bullock.
Hage held the advantage with pink and black left but a fine long pot from the Alfreton cueman left it resting on the final ball, and despite a perfectly adequate safety riposte from the home town player, Haggarty cut the black sublimely into the corner pocket from long range to cheers from his supportive team-mates.
COLE SMITH and SCOTT BROOKS, pairs champs
A great day for the Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 team was rounded off when youngster Cole Smith partnered Edgefold No 2's Scott Brooks to victory in the George Mills Trophy for the scotch doubles.
Wins over the Jack Lowe/Steve Bullock, Ricki Slack/Conrad Spencer and Roy Taylor/Alex Fisher combinations saw them into the final up against local boys Callum Greenfield and Andrew Bailey of Clay Cross No2 team.
The latter pair had overcome Rob Muxlow and Martin Barwick plus Reece Johnstone and Brian Fullard after a first round bye.
However, Brooks and Smith took control on the colours in the final showdown and leaving their opponents needing a snooker on pink and black, they eventually entered the winners roster for the first time each in this event.
Thanks to everyone who turned out to make it the night it was, once again plenty of stamina was required as ever, plus a big thank you to Clay Cross Brotherhood for hosting and Duncan Waring for his excellent organisation.
Happy New Year to all players and officials of the League and may the force be with you in 2026!
Alan Hopkinston Trophy (6 reds individual handicap): winner, Andrew Haggarty (Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1), runner-up, Lee Hage (Clay Cross Brotherhood No1).
