BUMPER TURN OUT SEES SEAN SCORE DEBUT SUCCESS

CHRISTMAS singles champion SEAN DOBNEY (Edgefold No 2)
THE fourth Christmas shootout night saw new winners all round on the honours board with players from Bolehill Institute No 1, Edgefold No 2 and Jaxx Q Club of Belper all playing prominent roles.
The turnout of 18 matched the best yet of a couple of seasons ago and made for a competitive evening of light hearted yet keenly contested quickfire snooker with the six red formats.

The Alan Hopkinson Memorial Trophy (6 reds individual handicap) went to Edgefold's Sean Dobney, who with breaks of 31 in the semi final against team mate Jodie McLarkey and 24 in the final against Jaxx's Ben Turner, triumphed on his Christmas competition debut.
Martyn Taylor made the evening's top break of 39 in the second round to see off last season's champion Ian Peacock.

SHAUN SMITH (Jaxx Q Club) and ANDREW BROUGH (Bolehill No 1) scotch doubles winners
Turner also went close in the George Mills Trophy competition (6 reds scotch doubles handicap) as he and partner Wayne Shooter of Strutt No 1 fell at the final hurdle, this time to Andrew Brough (Bolehill 1) and Shaun Smith (Jaxx).
Yellow, green and brown put the latter pair 19 in front with 18 on and that was enough to see them home after Brough's fluke on the black had earlier put out Kevin Holmes and Chris Drabble in their opening match, also culminating in a 22 clearance.

SIMON ZOPPI (Bolehill No 1) was top speedster pictured with Martyn Taylor runner up.
Simon Zoppi (Bolehill 1) lifted the Eddie Lomas Speed Snooker Challenge Trophy (fastest to clear the colours), as a switch of tables seemed to de-rail final opponent Martyn Taylor, having had to come from well adrift in the semi final to see off  Jodie McLarkey whose attempts to toy with his team-mate backfired in spectacular style at the end!

Kevin Holmes gave an interesting "slow is fast" approach to the event, which nearly paid off in a tortoise-and-hare type style against Wayne Shooter but generally the key to victory was to pot the balls cleanly and leave the ideal position as ever.

Zoppi had a very quick eye for this all evening, having earlier seen off Shak Mirza, Chris Drabble and Wayne Shooter en route to success and afterwards revealed he is proposing a shot clock rule be introduced for the rest of the season as well as being lined up as the exclusive figurehead for a leading brand of sportswear trainers in the Belper area.

The leading scotch doubles break for the Presidents Cup remains in the hands of the Alfreton father of son pairing of Jamie and Kevin Rowland (26) with now just the semi finals and final left in the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup for it to be overhauled.

Thanks to everyone for turning out and to Jaxx Q Club for providing the venue for an excellent night of entertainment with some superb grub to boot.

It just remains to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all players and supporters of the Snooker and Billiards Leagues and matches re-commence the week beginning Monday, January 5th.

Christmas Six-Red Individual Handicap for the Alan Hopkinson Memorial Trophy: winner, Sean Dobney (Edgefold Matlock No 2); runner-up, Ben Turner (Jaxx Q Club Belper).

Christmas Six-Red Scotch Doubles Handicap for the George Mills Trophy: winners, Andrew Brough (Bolehill Institute No 1) and Shaun Smith (Jaxx Q Club Belper); runners-up, Wayne Shooter (Belper Strutt No 1) and B Turner (Jaxx Q Club Belper).

CHRISTMAS SHOOTOUT NIGHT 2014 IS ON THE HORIZON....

RALPH AND WILL SECURE ALFRETON'S SEMI FINAL DATE

RALPH EDGSON .. heroic doubles success with Will Salt
THE quarter finals of the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup couldn't have been more thrilling as all three games completed finished in 4-3 scorelines, each being decided on the final frame and two of them down to the very last black (one a re-spotter).
Alfreton Palmer Morewood took the spoils at Belper Strutt No 1 with Kevin Rowland edging out danger man Ben Monk on the black in the opener before Simon Mayes increased the lead.
Mark Newby with his own black ball win pulled it back to 2-1 and then Steve Bullock defeated Jamie Rowland 29-19 to leave it all square.
However, after the first two scotch doubles frames were shared, the heroes were Ralph Edgson and Will Salt who edged out Newby and Wayne Shooter 45-38 on a re-spotted black after the scores had initially finished tied, to thus ensure a semi final berth for their team.

Their opponents will be Matlock Cons who defeated Bolehill Institute No 1 on their travels after coming from 2-0 and 3-2 down to win by the minimum margin.
Simon Zoppi won both his frames for the hosts but Richard Deakin and Nick Kay took the decisive doubles frame on the blue.

The other black ball finish saw Edgefold No 2 shade Bolehill No 2 after coming from 3-2 down.
Sean Dobney levelled matters on the black after Ian Peacock had nosed the visitors ahead and eventually it fell to Adam Gregory to take the match winning ball in the scotch doubles after a couple of opportunities had gone begging for the visitors.
The other match is held over to the New Year due to scheduling difficulties.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup quarter final results: Belper Strutt No 1 3, Alfreton Palmer Morewood 4; Bolehill Institute No 1 3, Matlock Cons 4; Edgefold Matlock No 2 4, Bolehill Institute No 2 3; Edgefold Matlock No 1 v Belper Strutt No 2 postponed until Tues Jan 06.
Open Individual Handicap 1st round results: Ricki Slack 2, Nick Kay 1; Paul Holmes 2, Duncan Harwood 0; Andy Russell 2, Martyn Taylor 0; Sean Dobney 2, Mark Sayer 0.

No 1 TEAM TAKE THE SPOILS IN STRUTT CLUB DERBY

WAYNE SHOOTER's frame win saw BELPER STRUTT No 1 over the line
THE STRUTT Club derby is always a keenly contested affair in the Belper sporting calendar and this time around it was the No 1 team who emerged with bragging rights after a 4-1 win in the latest round of games in the J K Interiors and Joinery Services League.
Ben Monk, fresh from a starring role in the Derby League the previous night, held too much firepower in the opener to register a 79-46 success over Keith Hubbold.
Chris Stubbs equalised in the next with a classy display but a narrow verdict for Steve Bullock over Dave Needham edged the No 1 outfit back into the lead.
And another hard fought game saw Wayne Shooter deliver the decisive blow, as he edged out Justin Weller 75-62 to secure the victory before further icing on the cake came via the pairs leg.

The top two teams clashed in Matlock and Bolehill No 2 ended the unbeaten run of Edgefold No 1 with a battling 3-2 triumph.
Martin Forster scored a pivotal 81-71 win over Andy Russell (28 break) in the second frame, as in attempting an ultra thin cut to take the spoils, the home player missed the ball and left Forster to take what was now the decisive pink in a topsy turvy contest.
Narrow wins for Keith Robertson and Mick Bunting sealed the deal before Neil Parkinson (runs of 28 and 20) and Russell eroded the deficit in the doubles leg.

Matlock Club maintained their unbeaten home record as they shaded Jaxx Q Club of Belper 3-2. Paul Holmes black ball win proved crucial while Ben Turner top scored for the visitors.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood gained their second 4-1 scoreline in as many weeks as they saw off Matlock Cons.
Simon Mayes took both his singles and doubles legs while Jack Lynch opened his account for Cons.

In the other match Edgefold No 2 defeated Bolehill No 1 3-2  as Sean Dobney came from 1-40 behind against Andrew Brough (29 break) to win 55-40 before scoring a decisive 38 break in the deciding doubles leg.

BROUGH CLEARANCE SETS BOLEHILL No1 ON RIGHT PATH

ANDREW BROUGH ... stirring clearance for BOLEHILL No 1
MATLOCK CONS hosted Bolehill Institute No 1 in the latest round of J K Interiors & Joinery Services League matches and it was the away team who continued their recent revival courtesy of a 3-2 win.
The first three frames decided the issue as firstly Andrew Brough staged an excellent rally to run out with blue to black in fine style, in the process pipping Gareth Johnson 52-50.
Colin Marchington then increased the lead and Ricki Slack (24 break) always held sway in the third to settle matters.
Cons fought to the end, however, and a vintage performance from Charlie Hodgkinson pulled one back before Johnson and partner Chris Parker took the doubles on the final black.

Conversely, Bolehill No 2 team have hit a rocky spell after their flying start and were beaten 4-1 by Jaxx Q Club of Belper.
Debutant Shaun Smith with breaks of 22 and 20 put in a starring role as he and Tim Maslin scored wide margin wins though Ian Peacock and Martin Forster made sure there was no whitewash by taking the doubles leg.

Edgefold No 1 continued their emphatic romp at the top with a seventh straight win, this time 4-1 at Belper Strutt Club No 2 who could only play three of the five frames due to unforeseen circumstances.
Justin Weller had given the hosts the lead but Andy Russell and Duncan Harwood won tight frames to make sure their teams unbeaten record remained intact.

Strutt No 1 team scored their fifth consecutive 3-2 success at Edgefold No 2 with Paul Jarrett top scoring despite the best efforts of Sean Dobney, who triumphed in both his singles and doubles frames, aided by breaks of 32, 25 and 22.

Elsewhere,  Matlock Club put up a plucky display before finding Alfreton Palmer Morewood too strong on the night, with Simon Mayes (43 break) contributing to a 4-1 scoreline.

EDGEFOLD No 1 INCREASE LEAD AT TOP OF THE TABLE

ANDY RUSSELL ... winning night in singles and doubles plus 42 break
THRILLS and spills aplenty in this week's J K Interiors & Joinery Services Snooker League starting with the leaders Edgefold No 1's battle with their No 2 team which went to the wire.
Richard Ferguson, with the highest league break so far of 47, took the opener before Andy Russell increased the lead courtesy of his own run of 42 to see off danger man Martyn Taylor.
However, Luke Thomas on his debut pulled one back before Sean Dobney's black ball win over Neil Parkinson made it all square going into the deciding doubles.
It was Russell and Rob Muxlow who held sway here however, with a vital 75-53 win to keep their side's unbeaten record intact.

Nearest rivals Bolehill Institute No 2 fell to their first defeat, 4-1 at Matlock Club for whom Keith Manlove top scored with only Mick Bunting able to offer any resistance for the vanquished.

Two matches were decided on the final black as home teams Bolehill No 1 and Belper Strutt No 1 edged out Alfreton Palmer Morewood and Matlock Cons respectively.

Simon Zoppi and Ricki Slack were in fine form for the Wirksworth based outfit, with Slack taking pink and black in the doubles to secure the spoils after requiring the last three balls.
Father and son Kevin and Jamie Rowland notched their first wins for Alfreton.

Ben Monk had contributions of 38 and 23 for Belper Strutt No 1, for whom Mark Newby and Richard Murren scraped home in the doubles to earn the verdict after earlier singles wins for Gareth Johnson and Chris Parker had put the visitors in front.

The other match featured a Belper derby with Jaxx Q Club defeating Strutt Club No 2 4-1. Tim Maslin top scored for the victors who were home and hosed before Justin Weller and Keith Hubbold took the doubles leg.

THIRD WIN ON THE BOUNCE FOR BELPER STRUTT No 1

STEVE BULLOCK ... experienced head for BELPER STRUTT No 1
BELPER STRUTT No 1 reeled off their third straight 3-2 win in the J K Interiors & Joinery Services League since their opening day loss as they earned a narrow verdict from the short trip to Alfreton Palmer Morewood.
However, the home team's Andrew Beardsley maintained his unbeaten record seeing off ex-team mate and danger man Ben Monk 90-58 with a superb first frame display.
Paul Jarrett (23 break) just edged the next despite a retort of 25 from Simon Mayes and then the experienced heads of Steve Bullock (71-26) and Mark Newby (60-21) saw Strutt over the line with some hardened matchplay.
Ralph Edgson and William Salt pulled one back in the doubles, getting the better of Monk and Wayne Shooter 68-50 to reduce the deficit to the minimum margin.

At the top, both first and second placed teams earned 4-1 wins.
Edgefold No 1 got the better of Matlock Cons, for whom Gareth Johnson's black-ball win over the hitherto unbeaten Andy Russell was the high spot.
However, Neil Parkinson and Richard Ferguson each produced heavy scoring salvos either side of that and Duncan Harwood finished the job.

Bolehill Institute No 2 continued their winning spree at Belper Strutt No 2 with Martin Forster and Mick Bunting top scoring. Keith Hubbold notched for the hosts.

And Bolehill No 1 returned to winning ways with a 4-1 home defeat of Matlock Club.
Andrew Brough and Mark Gwynne-Jones won each of their singles and doubles frames whilst Keith Manlove replied for the visitors.
Jaxx Q Club postponed their match at Edgefold No 2.

BELPER STRUTT No 2 TAKE TOP SPOT IN GROUP B

KEITH HUBBOLD was one of BELPER STRUTT No 2's match-winners
BELPER STRUTT No 2 and Alfreton Palmer Morewood were both unbeaten so far and vying for top spot in Group B going into the final qualifying round of matches in the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup.
Andrew Beardsley is showing fine form in early season and continued his run of impressive performances with a 46-7 win in the opener to strike first blood for Alfreton.

However, Justin Weller quickly equalised and then Keith Hubbold edged Belper ahead with a 39-19 verdict in the next.

Dave Needham maintained the momentum to make it 3-1 before Weller and Hubbold sealed the match in the first of the scotch doubles.

The visitors had to wait until the final frame before Beardsley and Ralph Edgson got them back on the scoreboard, though both teams will qualify for the next stage.

Belper Strutt No 1 were already through from Group C and were joined by Matlock Cons and Edgefold No 2 who clashed on Dale Road.

Cons got the win they needed but only by the minimum margin, meaning both teams will progress into the quarter finals.

Gareth Johnson and Chris Parker saw the hosts 2-0 up before Gary Blackburn pulled one back and eventually Richard Deakin and Charlie Hodgkinson took the decisive scotch doubles leg.

In Group A a mix-up meant the Bolehill No 1 v Jaxx match is delayed with the home team offering a replay in early December while the No 2 team ended Edgefold No 1's unbeaten run in all competitions 4-3 in the only other match.

Richard Ferguson (28 break) saw the Matlock side in front, but four unanswered frames starting with Keith Robertson and ending with Ian Peacock and Martin Forster in the scotch doubles ensured a home victory despite a late rally from the visitors.

*Rule 31 applies - Failure to turn up for a match without giving prior notice will result in the offending team forfeiting the game and being deducted 2 further points.
(Unofficially, if there is a genuine misunderstanding and the offending team is normally of good repute, the wronged team is obviously at liberty to offer a re match if they think the circumstances dictate, in which case just the 2pts deduction would apply).  See above re proposed rescheduling.

JAXX CONTINUE THEIR GOOD WORK WITH EMPHATIC WIN

KEV HOLMES ... no let-up for JAXX Q CLUB
THE newly formed team from Belper's Jaxx Q Club have made a solid start to their J K Interiors & Joinery Services League campaign and continued their good work with a 4-1 home win over Matlock Cons.
Tim Maslin and Ben Turner were in great form, recording verdicts of 76-30 and 67-39 respectively before youngster Devon Neave, aided by a run of 22, added the third with some aplomb.

Kevin Holmes is now a seasoned performer in comparison and his 26 break helped make it 4-0 before Jack Lynch and Nick Kay finally stemmed the tide in the concluding doubles frame.

Matlock Club gained their second 3-2 win in as many home games as Mick McFall and Graeme Wood shaded the doubles 53-52 on the final black against Belper Strutt No 2, who were suffering the heartbreak of losing in this fashion for the second successive week.
Keith Hubbold top scored for the visitors.

Belper Strutt No 1 came from 2-1 down to edge Bolehill Institute No 1 3-2 with Ben Monk taking both his singles and doubles frames despite Ricki Slack notching a 34 break en route to a black ball victory.

At the top of the table, Edgefold No 1 continued to pile on the pressure with a 4-1 triumph over Alfreton Palmer Morewood with Andy Russell (38 break) and Neil Parkinson showing their class after Andrew Beardsley had put the visitors ahead.

Bolehill Institute No 2 came from 2-0 down to conquer Edgefold No 2 by the minimum margin after Sean Dobney and Gary Blackburn saw the Matlock team off to a flyer.
Keith Robertson's black ball win proved pivotal before Martin Forster and Mark Sayer sealed the deal in the deciding pairs contest.

EDGEFOLD No 1 CONTINUE FLYING START AT BOLEHILL

DUNCAN HARWOOD made the game secure for EDGEFOLD No 1
THIS weeks J K Interiors and Joinery Services Snooker League fixtures saw a clash of two of last seasons main trophy winners as play off victors and current leaders Edgefold No 1 travelled to league champions Bolehill Institute No 1.
Having taken maximum points from their opening two games, Edgefold's Andy Russell was charged with keeping the run going against home captain Ricki Slack and it was nip and tuck throughout in a marathon battle.

Slack, 11 ahead, clipped green into the middle and with brown over the pocket looked set to command a healthy position only for the cue ball to go up and down the table and agonisingly knock the hanging ball in for a foul. Eventually it was Russell who took a mid range pink and then black in the middle for the early spoils.

Richard Ferguson then pulled away from Mark Gwynne-Jones with a break of 20 on the colours after another hard grind with each of the opening frames taking an hour apiece to complete.

Andrew Brough and Duncan Harwood served up a thriller in frame three with the Bolehill player twice potting brown only to go in off on each occasion before Harwood made it 3-0 with a steady nerve on the remaining colours.

Simon Zoppi thereafter took both his singles and doubles frames to reduce the arrears to the minimum margin.

Bolehill No 2 team continue to press hard in second place, winning 4-1 at Matlock Cons as Keith Robertson (breaks of 45 and 23) and Mick Bunting (wins in both singles and doubles) proved too hot to handle. Nick Kay registered for the hosts with a black ball success.

The other victors were all gaining their opening league win of the season.
Edgefold No 2 edged out Belper Strutt No 2 3-2 on the final black courtesy of Martyn Taylor's pot (having earlier notched a break of 31 in defeat to Keith Hubbold). Sean Dobney also had runs of 25 and 24.

Belper Strutt No 1 triumphed by the same scoreline over Matlock Club, with Mark Newby (32) and Ben Monk (30) amongst the breaks, the latter scoring on the final black. Mick McFall and Paul Holmes notched for the visitors.

And in a very tight match, Jaxx Q Club prevailed, also 3-2 at Alfreton Palmer Morewood with a host of black ball games being the order of the day.
Shak Mirza won both his singles and doubles frames while Ralph Edgson top scored for the Amber Valley outfit.
