Andy Russell, aided by a 35 break, made it 3-1 before the first two scotch doubles both went the way of the visitors to tie things up.

TOM BROUGHTON put ALFRETON No 2 on the right track
NEWCOMERS Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 bounced back from their opening defeat in The Joinery Joint Snooker League with a hard fought 3-2 home win over Matlock Golf Club.
Tom Broughton (29 break) used his county "B" team experience to good effect with an opening victory over ex county champ Graham Jones 62-42 before Derek Smith scored a convincing triumph in the next.
The visitors battled back though with Ian McKay (27 break) taking a 77-20 verdict and then debutant Tony Blant equalising soon after.
However, with the home team utilising their six-man squad to full effect, Ryan Taylor and John Smith (not the famous octogenarian of the same name) successfully combined in the doubles frame to take the spoils.

Edgefold No 1, who gained maximum points last week, came unstuck 3-2 at Bolehill Institute No 2 for whom Mark Sayer put in a starring role, defeating league titan Andy Russell 90-52 in a career best performance.

CHRIS PARKER ... decisive scoreline for MATLOCK GOLF CLUB
THE opening round of matches in The Joinery Joint Snooker League took place this week and with last seasons champions Belper Strutt Club sitting it out, it was a chance for some of the other contenders to steal an early march.
Matlock Club were off to a winning start in the six red cup last week but couldnt quite contain visitors Matlock Golf Club who took the spoils with a 3-2 verdict.
Richard Deakin took the first of four black ball frames before Chris Parker increased the lead with the most decisive scoreline of the night, aided by a run of 22.
Keith Manlove reduced the arrears 56-51 in the next but Graham Jones' 72-71 nail-biter secured a decisive advantage for the visitors before the two Pauls, Holmes and Bryan took the remaining doubles leg.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 reversed last weeks six red cup defeat to Edgefold No 2 in fine style with a 4-1 win. Rob Dicken took the opener for the visitors but from thereon the hosts took control with Jamie Rowland and Simon Mayes in fine form.

HOME TEAMS TAKE THE SPOILS IN OPENING CUP JOUSTS

PAUL HOLMES, undefeated in three frames
THE new season sprung back into life with two matches from Group A of the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup and it was the home teams who took the spoils in each case, defeating last seasons holders and the play off winners respectively.
Bolehill No 1 began their defence of the trophy at Matlock Club and things looked rosy as Colin Marchington and Ricki Slack (24 break) saw them surge 2-0 ahead.

Paul Holmes struck back for the home side with a convincing verdict in frame three but Ian Birks took the remaining singles leg for the visitors.

However, the tide well and truly turned in the three scotch doubles legs with Holmes remaining undefeated on the night. Paul Bryan sank the winning pink from close range to get the hosts off to a more than satisfactory start.

Meanwhile successive play off winners Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 came from 3-0 down to level matters at Edgefold No 2 before eventually succumbing in the final scotch doubles.

Rob Dicken, Sam Lavelle (22 break) and Tom Chambers had the hosts in a commanding position before Jamie Rowland turned on the style for the Amber Valley cuemen, firstly in his singles match and then partnered by Simon Mayes and his father Kevin Rowland.

It fell to Dicken and Chambers to settle the issue for a 4-3 win and halt the valiant comeback but still leaves everything to play for in the group.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup Group A: Matlock Club 4, Bolehill Institute No 1 3; Edgefold Matlock No 2 4, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 3.

ALFRETON ARE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS ONCE AGAIN

ALFRETON PALMER MOREWOOD pictured lifting the Jaeger Trophy for the Champion of Champions play offs, L-R: Andrew Beardsley, Will Salt, Jamie Rowland, Ralph Edgson and Kevin Rowland. Also played: Simon Mayes.
ANOTHER enthralling season of the Darley Dale and District Snooker League reached its climax this week as Alfreton Palmer Morewood Club retained the Jaeger Trophy by defeating Edgefold No 1 3-2 in the Champion of Champions play off final.
Neil Parkinson had laid down a stern marker for the No 4 seeds in the opening frame however, with a 27 clearance embellishing an already impressive performance in a 73-27 verdict over Kevin Rowland.

Jamie Rowland equalised in the next with a 58-26 scoreline over Duncan Harwood to continue his fine run of form of late and then Andrew Beardsley edged a black ball decider with Rob Muxlow to give Alfreton the ascendency.

Andy Russell levelled things up in defeating Ralph Edgson 93-46 but Jamie Rowland and Beardsley combined irresistibly in the concluding doubles to keep out danger man Russell and score an emphatic 97-20 success to retain the silverware for their team.

The following night Edgefold team mates Russell and Muxlow locked horns in the Individual Handicap final and again it went the way of the reigning champion.

Russell soon raced into a 3-0 lead with breaks of 38,34,22 and 20 before Muxlow hit back with his own contribution of 30 in the fourth frame. This was quickly matched by Russell but superb pots from Muxlow on blue and pink ensured there would be no whitewash.

It was also a close battle in the next with Muxlow needing both pink and black to bring it back to 3-2 but it was Russell who got the decisive opening to win his second individual trophy of the season and his fourth in all including pairs and team events.

IAN WINS THE BATTLE OF THE BROTHERS IN "B" FINAL

MARTIN FORSTER and IAN PEACOCK prior to doing brotherly battle.
MARTIN FORSTER and IAN PEACOCK met in the "B" (Intermediate) Individual Handicap and in doing so achieved the unique feat of becoming the first twin brothers to contest a Darley Dale and District League final.
The Bolehill Institute No 2 team players are following in the footsteps of father and son Clayton and Ricki Slack from the same club who reached the final of the same event 35 years ago.
Martin, who takes his surname from his wife, had early chances but was taking time to get into rhythm and Ian surged into a 2-0 lead, taking the first courtesy of a long raking blue 53-30 and then following up with a 57-20 scoreline.
Ian trailed in the next but after fluking the green, came on strong when it mattered, taking the clinching black into the middle pocket for a 3-0 verdict.
Ian wins the competition for the second time while Martin is runner-up for the third time in four seasons.

Elsewhere, the Champion of Champions play offs for the Jaeger Trophy got underway and Edgefold No 1 will host Alfreton Palmer Morewood in the final after winning the toss for home advantage following their respective semi final victories.
Alfreton triumphed 3-1 against Bolehill No 1, although Colin Marchington had given the visitors an early lead.
This was soon overturned however with Kevin Rowland making the game safe in the fourth frame.

The Matlock cuemen scored an excellent 3-2 win at this seasons league champions Belper Strutt Club as Andy Russell engineered a superb 55 break in the concluding doubles leg after Mark Newby had equalised for the hosts.
