BOLEHILL INSTITUTE No 1 TEAM RETAIN CAPTAINS CUP

BOLEHILL INSTITUTE No 1 with the Captains Cup Team Trophy.
L-R: Andrew Brough, Colin Marchington, Ricki Slack, Ian Birks and Simon Zoppi.
BOLEHILL INSTITUTE provided both finalists of the Captains Cup Team Handicap competition for the first time in League history and ultimately it was the No 1 team who retained the trophy following their success in the same event last year.
Things did not start according to plan however, as Mick Bunting took pink and black to edge counterpart Ricki Slack 66-55 in the battle of the captains after the latter's attempted safety shot had double-kissed.

Andrew Brough hit back for the holders with a hard fought 67-50 win over Martin Forster in the next and then Simon Zoppi, having flown in from Italy the same afternoon (honestly folks!) scored a vital 62-28 verdict over Ian Peacock after taking most of the colours following a tight frame.

That left 40 in the overall aggregate, and after Ian Birks had taken pink and eventually black to defeat Keith Robertson 55-44, only the doubles remained if there was to be any comeback.

But Ricki Slack and Colin Marchington battened down the hatches and came through with a 59-25 scoreline to leave the final totals at 298-213.

Also taking place were the Jimmy Harper Plate semi finals, played under the same format.

The battle of Belper went to the Strutt's No 2 team who saw off Jaxx Q Club by 60 points, avenging their Six Red Cup semi final defeat to the same oppoistion in the process.
Chris Stubbs and Steve Robinson were the star men for their respective teams.

The real thriller, though, took place at Edgefold Club, where Belper Strutt Club No 1 seemed to be coasting to a comfortable success over Matlock Club with a lead of 80-plus points going into the final doubles frame.

IAN ROSE ...superb 83 break for Matlock Club.
But Ian Rose, returning to the fold for a rare appearance this season, had other ideas and a superb 83 break on his first visit to the table suddenly put the game back in the balance.
And it was eventually a very relieved Justin Weller who sank the final black for Strutt to leave them just one point in the ascendancy at the end of the nights play.

Ben Monk was in fine form with a series of impressive breaks in both the remaining league match between Marehay and Matlock Golf Club and the Hartshorne Cup 2-man team semi final.
His victory from 40 adrift over Ian McKay also earned him the most wins in A Division prize with 18 out of 20 off the top handicap rating.

The Golf Club upset this years champs however with a 3-2 home win after the two Chris's, Drabble and Parker, played a starring role.

CHAMPAGNE FLOWS FOR BELPER STRUTT CLUB No 1

THE BIG match of the week was the B Division title decider which drew a much bigger than usual crowd to Belper Strutt Club, where the No 1 team entertained Matlock's Gladiators Social Club needing any kind of victory to secure the trophy.
The visitors could earn either a deciding play off match with a 3-2 win of their own or take the title outright should they earn a 4-1 verdict.

Mark Newby delivered a vital blow early doors for the Belper outfit as he defeated dual Derbyshire Under 21 champion Troy Brett 59-39 to continue his fine showing this season.

Vinnie Dennis hit back strongly to defeat Wayne Shooter in the next 58-26 before a pivotal clash saw Paul Jarrett come from 40 adrift against Mark Gwynne-Jones with the aid of a 24 break to triumph on the final black by 54-53 in a real cliff-hanger.

And the victory celebrations were unleashed after the next when Justin Weller edged out Dwayne Martin 58-48 before Troy Brett showed his undoubted class with a break of 66, the highest in the section, in the concluding doubles frame.

There was also a cracking encounter at Marehay Miners Welfare as the home team saw off the No 2 team from Strutt 3-2 on the final black.

Ben Monk knocked in a string of breaks during the evening but those efforts were bettered by Andrew Gratton who notched the highest A Division break of 59 in his victory in the second frame.

Chris Stubbs' 12th win of the season for the visitors ensured him of the most wins prize in B Division.

Bolehill Institute No 1 wrapped up the A Division runners-up spot with a 4-1 home win over Jaxx Q Club, though four of the frames went to the final black.

Andrew Brough's 18 clearance saw him superbly manoeuvre the black out over the pocket when taking the pink whilst the doubles frame saw the home pairing come from the snookers required stage as Ricki Slack also took blue, pink and black to sneak the extra point at the end.

Jaxx's Dan Robinson opened his account for the season with a fine display of potting earlier on.
NEIL PARKINSON finished the league campaign on a high for Edgefold Club.
Edgefold and Matlock Golf Club also earned 4-1 home wins respectively against Matlock Club and Bolehill No 2.

Captains Neil Parkinson and Keith Manlove top scored in the first encounter while at the Golf Club Graham Jones and Charlie Hodgkinson came from well adrift to take decisive points for the hosts.

WHILE Marehay Miners Welfare routinely wrapped up A Division this week, Belper Strutt Club No 1 and Gladiators Social Club of Matlock are going down to the wire in the fight to lift the B Division Shield with the sides due to meet in the final round of fixtures.
Strutt 1 took maximum points from their home fixture with Matlock Club with Paul Jarrett and Mark Newby top scoring and winning their doubles frame to boot while Gladiators Social Club had to settle for a 4-1 verdict after Keith Robertson of Bolehill Institute No 2 won his frame on the black.
Dave Gastrell, Troy Brett and Mark Gwynne-Jones were in fine form for the hosts however.

Marehay scored a 4-1 triumph at Matlock's Edgefold Club with Ben Monk notching breaks of 36,30 and 28 and Andrew Gratton 25 and 23 whilst Jason Ankers continued his emergence as a talented newcomer with his second win in as many outings in reply.
STEVE BUCKLEY helped to turn the game around for Belper Strutt Club No 2.
Bolehill No 1 fell 3-2 at home to Belper Strutt No 2 after leading 2-0 with Andrew Brough top-scoring only for Steve Buckley and Adam Winson to win both their singles and the deciding doubles match  at the end.

FORMIDABLE FORCE ARE THE SIX RED CHAMPS AGAIN

MAREHAY MW L-R: Jamie Woodward, Ben Monk, Jamie Rowland and Andrew Gratton.
MAREHAY MINERS WELFARE'S formidable line-up continued their dominance of the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup by defeating Belper's Jaxx Q Club 4-2 in the final, following up last season's success when playing from PJ'z Club of Ripley.
It wasn't all plain sailing however, as Mark Jones upset the apple-cart early doors with a 36-21 win over danger man Ben Monk before Andrew Gratton, aided by a break of 25, quickly levelled matters by defeating Steve Robinson 68-21.

Two tight battles ensued thereafter, with Jamie Woodward edging out county pool player Ian Burgoyne, who was making his debut for Jaxx, 34-22 before Paul Ogden equalised at 2-2 with a 30-21 verdict over Jamie Rowland.

So with it all now resting on the remaining scotch doubles legs, this is where Ben Monk came to the fore to settle the issue, partnering firstly Andrew Gratton and then Jamie Rowland to victories by 44-29 and 51-23 respectively to conclude an excellent night's work from the Amber Valley cueists.

In the only other scheduled match this week, Gladiators Social Club's Dwayne Martin and Troy Brett reached the Denis Morton Pairs Handicap final thanks to a 3-0 success over Bolehill's Andrew Brough and Simon Zoppi.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup final: Marehay MW / PJ'z 4, Jaxx Q Club Belper 2.
Denis Morton Pairs Handicap Trophy semi final: D Martin / T Brett 3, A Brough / S Zoppi 0 (at Matlock Club).
Breaks: A Gratton 25; B Monk / J Rowland 24; B Monk / A Gratton 23; T Brett 22,21.

DARLEY DALE LEAGUE V HOPE VALLEY LEAGUE CHALLENGE MATCH
This match is a substitute for the originally planned match against Derby League which we couldn't pursue due to their committee being in transition. It will be played at Eyam Mechanics Institute on Wednesday May 22nd @ 7pm, we are aiming for six players playing two frames each on two tables with a cup which has been donated to play for, hoping to make it an annual event on a home and away basis. Places decided by end of season individual rankings, points system based on handicaps/matches won and lost.

The idea this year is to present trophies on finals nights where possible along with any prizes, if mementoes are requested we will get these to players concerned ASAP....

SIX RED CUP FINALISTS COMING NICELY TO THE BOIL

ACE CUEIST Ben Monk continued in fine fettle this week with breaks of 30, 27 and 20 (twice) as A Division leaders Marehay Miners Welfare scored a 4-1 success away at Bolehill Institute No 2.
Ben notched a century points haul as he pointed the Amber Valley outfit in the right direction before Lee Whatton increased the lead with a black ball verdict in frame two.

Ian Peacock pulled one back for the hosts before Jamie Rowland made the game safe and then Monk and Andrew Beardsley rubber-stamped a good nights work in the concluding doubles frame.

Jaxx Q Club, Marehay's opponents in the upcoming six red cup final, also warmed up nicely with an identical 4-1 win at Matlock Club.

MARK JONES put the finishing touches on Jaxx's impromptu fireworks display.
It looked set for a tight battle when Mick McFall equalised Paul Ogden's opener, but then Liam Bullock unleashed breaks of 31 in his singles and 51 in the doubles (the latter effort straight from the break-off, splitting the pack from behind). Mark Jones then cleared up with 38 to finish off the impromptu fireworks display.

Belper Strutt Club No 2 had Dave Needham and Chris Stubbs to thank as they won both frames they contested to tip the balance 3-2 their way at Matlock Golf Club, leaving them still in with an outside chance in B Division.

This is because both the top teams were defeated.
Belper Strutt No 1 fell 3-0 down to Matlock's Edgefold Club after Neil Parkinson's black ball win but fought back well through Justin Weller, who took his singles frame and then the doubles partnered by Steve Bullock.

Gladiators Social Club's Dwayne Martin was another to get past the 100pts barrier but despite good back-up from Troy Brett, who had runs of 28,24 and 21, black ball wins for Andrew Brough and Ian Birks proved pivotal as Bolehill No 1 took the spoils with a 3-2 win.

League week 16 results: Bolehill Inst No 2 1, Marehay MW/PJ'z 4; Matlock Club 1, Jaxx Q Club Belper 4; Matlock Golf Club 2, Belper Strutt No 2 3; Belper Strutt No 1 2, Edgefold Matlock 3; Gladiators SC Matlock 2, Bolehill Inst No 1 3.
