BOLEHILL No 2 TEAM EARN LOCAL BRAGGING RIGHTS

MARK GWYNNE-JONES rescued a point for the No1 team but to no avail
THE ASHFORD ARMS Premier League swung back into action after the Christmas and cup competition breaks and a local derby match saw Bolehill No 2 emerge victorious with a 3-2 success over Bolehill No 1.
Keith Robertson took brown, blue and pink to seal the opener 55-46 for the second team and it looked set to be 2-0 when Mark Gwynne-Jones required a snooker on pink and black in the next.
However, an unexpected foul from Martin Forster left the door ajar and Gwynne-Jones stepped in to take pink and eventually black to equalise.
Ian Peacock restored the advantage with a 65-34 verdict in frame three but Ian Birks made it 2-2 thanks to a re-spotted black success leaving all to play for.
But once again Robertson stepped forward, this time with captain Mick Bunting to take the doubles leg 72-36 and with it local pride for at least the next few months.
Leaders Edgefold No 2 were edged out 3-2 at Alfreton Palmer Morewood despite Richard Ferguson top scoring on his return to the team in the opener. Rob Dickin notched breaks of 23 and 21 to equalise after the hosts had took the intervening two frames but John Smith and Guy Taylor made sure the Amber Valley cuemen went home happy in the decider.
Edgefold No 1 narrowed the gap to one point with a 4-1 win over Crich Comrades. Jason Ankers won each of his singles and doubles frames whilst Crich's version of John Smith was sole contributor for the vanquished.
The other game saw Belper Strutt Club defeat Matlock Golf Club 4-1. Paul Jarrett with a storming 74-8 scoreline made the game safe in frame four to earn himself T & M Motors player of the week whilst Tony Blant was on target for the visitors.

EDGEFOLD 1 EMERGE WITH HONOUR INTACT IN BIG CLASH

JASON ANKERS battened down the hatches in decider
THE OPENING jousts in the group stages of this seasons Captains Cup saw two closely contested matches and one convincing verdict and as in the Six Red Cup, the draw pitted the two Edgefold teams into head to head combat in Group C.
The first frame couldnt have been closer (literally) as Jason Ankers and Rob Dicken fought out a 63-63 tie, which did not require the black being respotted as in this competition the overall points aggregate alone decides the final outcome.
Sean Dobney's 80-64 success put the No 2 team into the ascendancy but Rob Muxlow's century points haul in the next swung the match back in the favour of the No 1 cuemen.
Muxlow had to fill in again in frame four due to holiday absences and, giving up the handicap penalty in such circumstances proved a little too much on this occasion with Tom Chambers winning 87-61 to narrow the deficit to just five points going into the deciding doubles leg.
But Ankers and Duncan Harwood battened down the hatches and ground out the required success 80-50 to give the No 1 team a 368-333 triumph.
Elsewhere, Belper Strutt Club edged out Crich Comrades 312-282 in Group A with Paul Jarrett and Keith Fretwell top scoring respectively.
Alfreton Palmer Morewood kept up their unbeaten record over Bolehill No 1 with a ready verdict of 348-210, Ralph Edgson and Guy Taylor totting up 95 and 94 points respectively with Ricki Slack's 39 break the only real highlight for the home team.
Captains Cup (Team Aggregate Competition) Group A: Bolehill Institute No 1 210, Alfreton Palmer Morewood 348; Group B: Edgefold Matlock No 1 368, Edgefold Matlock No 2 333; Group C: Crich Comrades 282, Belper Strutt Club 312.

MARK SETS BELPER UP FOR ANOTHER SIX RED FINAL

MARK NEWBY ... swerve and double to take scotch doubles leg
BELPER STRUTT CLUB are making a bold bid to retain the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup, named in memory of their late team mate,  for a second successive season and will contest the final once more having seen off the challenge of Bolehill Institute No 1 4-2 on Campbell Street.
Steve Bullock played a captains knock to take the opener 52-31 before Mark Newby added the second 42-16 as they looked to reverse their league defeat to the same opposition.
Ricki Slack pulled one back for the visitors with a 41-21 verdict and then Ian Birks triumphed 37-17 to level matters at 2-2.
The first of the scotch doubles legs proved pivotal as Mark Newby, snookered on the brown which was near the baulk pocket, produced a superb masse shot to not only hit but pot it, and with blue invitingly over the pocket for partner Wayne Shooter, just the pink was required.
Newby took on the double and it went twice across into the middle pocket, with the decisive fourth frame added soon afterwards by Bullock and Justin Weller by a convincing 38-1 margin.
The other semi final proved a thriller as Edgefold No 2 defeated Matlock Golf Club 4-3 with a bizarre in-off on the final black from an attempted middle-pocket double deciding the match.
Sean Dobney won two of the three frames he contested while Rob Dickin took each of his scotch doubles legs. Chris Parker and Tony Blant had levelled matters for the Golf Club twice at 1-1 and 2-2 earlier in the night.
Bob McCartin Six Red Cup semi finals: Belper Strutt Club 4, Bolehill Institute No 1 2; Matlock Golf Club 3, Edgefold Matlock No 2 4.

SIZZLING CHRISTMAS ACTION AT JAXX Q CLUB, BELPER

RICKI SLACK (Bolehill No 1) was six red singles winner
FIFTEEN players turned out to make sure of another cracking nights entertainment in the 2017 Christmas Shootout at Jaxx Q Club where the action proved so sizzling that even the fire alarm sounded half way through the evening!
The Alan Hopkinson Memorial Trophy for the individual six red handicap competition went to his old Bolehill Institute team mate Ricki Slack, who defied a less than stellar previous record in the Christmas competitions to see off Steve Bullock, Keith Robertson, Derek Smith and finally hat-trick seeking Sean Dobney (winner in his last two years of competing but absent last year) in the final.
Dobney had a chance to pull it out of the fire after facing an early deficit but snookered himself with a clearance looking possible and Slack pulled out match winning long pots on green, brown and blue to be crowned champ.

ANDREW HAGGARTY (Alfreton PM) retained the speed snooker trophy
Alfreton Palmer Morewood's Andrew Haggarty showed he is as fleet of foot as ever as he lifted the Eddie Lomas Speed Snooker Challenge Handicap Trophy for the second successive season, a competition in which the goal is to be faster than your opponent in clearing the colours on adjacent tables.
Haggarty received a fitting bye in round one as the current holder, he thenwent on to defeat Charlie Hodgkinson, John Smith and ultimately Steve Bullock in a thrilling final.
Bullock, the oldest player in the event, in his own words showed that "the tortoise can beat the hare" on more than one occasion, and after drawing level with Haggarty at one stage with both players playing the pink with just black to go, it was anyone's game.
But the latter's pedigree came to the fore as he kept a cool head to see off the challenge and take the silverware back to Alfreton.

SAM LAVELLE (Edgefold No 2) and GUY TAYLOR (Alfreton PM) scotch doubles champs
That left just the George Mills Trophy for the scotch doubles handicap to be decided, and it went to the pairing of Sam Lavelle (Edgefold) and Guy Taylor (Alfreton) who between them pulled out fine pots on brown, blue and pink in the final to edge out Ian McKay and Des Smith. In the earlier rounds, they defeated Mark Newby and Nick Kay along with Charlie Hodgkinson and Steve Bullock.
Alan Hopkinson Memorial Trophy (6 reds individual handicap); winner, Ricki Slack (Bolehill Institute No 1); runner-up, Sean Dobney (Edgefold Matlock No 2).
Eddie Lomas Speed Snooker Challenge Handicap Trophy (fastest to clear the colours h2h): winner, Andrew Haggarty (Alfreton Palmer Morewood); runner-up, Steve Bullock (Belper Strutt Club).
George Mills Trophy (6 reds scotch doubles handicap): winners, Sam Lavelle (Edgefold Matlock No 2) and Guy Taylor (Alfreton Palmer Morewood); runners-up, Des Smith (Alfreton Palmer Morewood) and Ian McKay (Matlock Golf Club).

Ryan Taylor struck first for the Amber Valley cuemen with a 42-22 success in the opener before in form Sean Dobney levelled matters with a 38-9 verdict in the next.
Guy Taylor (20 break) scored a 33-8 triumph in frame three but once again it was locked together as Sam Lavelle won 36-10 in the last of the singles legs.
Dobney and Rob Dicken (20 break) had the visitors ahead for the first time in the first of the scotch doubles legs but Andrew Haggarty and Des Smith quickly equalised to leave everything resting on the final frame.
And in a tense battle, Dobney and Lavelle edged home 29-21 after an enthralling battle.
Strutt had their feet up by then, their victory the day before earning them top place in the group.
