BOLEHILL TEAMS EDGE OUT BELPER STRUTT CLUB TWICE

POETRY IN MOTION . . .  BOLEHILL No 2's MARK GWYNNE-JONES
THE TEAMS just below the play off positions in the Highfields Farm Butchers Premier Division did battle in the latest round of games and Bolehill Institute No 2 shaded their contest with Belper Strutt Club No 2 3-2 on Campbell Street.
Dave Needham put the hosts ahead early doors with a comfortable victory but from thereon, the visitors bossed proceedings with brothers Martin Forster and Ian Peacock earning narrow verdicts to wrestle the advantage.

And it was soon poetry in motion as renowned eclectic entertainer Mark Gwynne-Jones, making only his second appearance on the baize this season, secured the success with a 64-30 win over danger man Chris Stubbs.

Stubbs and Adam Winson took the final frame on the black to keep both teams hovering just outside the top four places.

Earlier in the week, the No 1 teams from the clubs previously mentioned had clashed at the same venue with a similar outcome of 3-2 to Bolehill.

Simon Zoppi, after seemingly fluking the black and apologising to opponent Paul Jarrett, then watched in horror as the cue ball drifted into a baulk pocket, giving the hosts an early lead.

But Colin Marchington, Ricki Slack and Ian Birks made the game safe for the league leaders before Jarrett and Wayne Shooter put in an impressive doubles display to reduce the deficit.

Edgefold Club gained maximum points with a 5-0 win over Matlock Club to move second in the table, with Martyn Taylor and Rob Muxlow winning both frames they contested.

EDGEFOLD SETTLE THE SCORE WITH CUP CONQUERORS

ROBERT MUXLOW ... all cylinders firing for EDGEFOLD CLUB
IN A RE-MATCH of last week's Captains Cup battle that went down to the deciding black, Edgefold Club and Matlock Conservative Club locked horns again in the Highfields Farm Butchers Premier Division but this time it was the home team who gained compensation on Edge Road with an excellent 4-1 triumph.
Martyn Taylor evened his personal battle with Jack Lynch who had taken his measure last week, courtesy of a 47 break en route to an 88-22 scoreline.

And with Robert Muxlow (breaks of 27 and 25) also firing on all cylinders, plus a narrow win for Neil Parkinson, the match was already decided by the end of frame three.
Visiting captain Nick Kay earned the sole register for the Cons.

The Bolehill Institute derby went the way of the No 1 team who maintained their position at the top of the table thanks to a 3-2 win.

Andrew Brough and Ricki Slack were in fine form for the leaders, with Christmas competition champ Ian Peacock likewise cueing stylishly for the No 2 outfit, but it fell to Simon Zoppi to seal the deal in frame four before Peacock and Mick Bunting reduced the arrears in the concluding doubles frame.

In the other match Belper Strutt No 1 saw off Matlock Club 3-2 with Steve Bullock top scoring to put the hosts 3-0 up before the visitors rallied towards the end with Keith Manlove taking both frames he was involved in on his return to league action.

JIMMY HARPER PLATE TO TAKE PLACE AS ROUND ROBIN

OWING to the availability of blank weeks for the teams concerned, we will after all be able to fit in the Jimmy Harper Cup Team Plate as a round robin competition (for the three first round losers of the Captains Cup).
Dates will be advised on this website and also on the competition sheet going out at the end of the week.
Overall points aggregate to count (same as Captains Cup), if any of the teams win both matches they  win the competition, otherwise it will highest points difference after the two games if all teams register a win and a loss.
This will not detract from the prize fund originally advertised for other events.

DEAD-EYE JACK MAKES NO MISTAKE ON DECIDING BLACK

JACK LYNCH ... finished the match the same way he started
THERE was a dramatic opening round to this seasons Captains Cup team aggregate competition as while Matlock Conservative Club kept alive their hopes of the "grand slam" of all four team events, current holders Bolehill Institute No 1 crashed out at the very first hurdle.
There was real tension in the air as Matlock's Edgefold Club almost produced one of the comebacks of the season in their home tie with the Cons.

Jack Lynch scored a 43-point triumph in the opener, Duncan Harwood edged a tight contest in frame two to narrow the deficit before Charlie Hodgkinson and Nick Kay increased the advantage again with rock-steady performances for the visitors.

And with a 62-point cushion going into the concluding doubles frame, some of the assembled spectators could be forgiven for leaving slightly early.

However, home pairing Harwood and Martyn Taylor had other ideas, and a sublime 49 break from the latter ensured proceedings went down to the wire.

But ultimately Lynch finished in the same fashion he had started the match, culminating with an outstanding pot on the deciding final black to earn his team a nail-biting 317-304 verdict.

PAUL BRYAN ... on target for MATLOCK CLUB
Bolehill Institute No 1, bidding to win the Cup for the third successive season, were ousted by a revitalised Matlock Club as Graeme Wood and Colin Marchington shared wide margin wins for each team in the opening exchanges.

Paul Bryan then opened his account for the season for the visitors in frame three, before Ian Birks' register for the hosts left the holders 15 points ahead going into the last frame.

But after a nip and tuck pairs battle, it fell to Keith Manlove, returning to the fold to partner Mick McFall after being hospitalised with appendicitis, to slam home a glorious long pink for a memorable 280-267 success.

Elsewhere, Belper Strutt No 1 gained revenge for last week's Six Red Cup defeat to their No 2 team, thanks to a convincing 320-162 points margin.

Ben Monk returned to action with aplomb for his new team, taking his frame 91-20 against old side-kick Andrew Gratton, with only fellow debutant Shaun Nicholls able to arrest the tide for the vanquished.

Captains Cup team aggregate competition Quarter Finals: Edgefold Matlock 304, Matlock Cons 317; Bolehill Inst No 1 267, Matlock Club 280; Belper Strutt No 1 320, Belper Strutt No 2 162.
