BLACK-BALL THRILLERS ABOUND IN STRUTT'S SUCCESS

ADAM WINSON scored a hat-trick of wins on the night for Belper Strutt Club No 2.
THE Bob McCartin Six-Red Cup quarter-finals took centre stage in the pre-festive week of matches and there were certainly some real thrillers, non more so than in the clash between Belper Strutt Club No 2 and Bolehill Institute No 1.
In a match of five black ball deciders, fortunes swung to and fro with Dave Needham putting the hosts ahead before Colin Marchington (re-spotted black) and Simon Zoppi (1pt victory) saw Bolehill edge ahead.

Adam Winson then won the first of all three frames he contested to equalise before Colin and partner Ricki Slack cleared up with a 22 to make it 3-2.

Two real nail-biting frames ensued as firstly Adam and partner Chris Stubbs hauled their team level before in the decider Colin's black into the middle wobbled all around the pocket and Dave clipped it in to secure a 36-34 victory for himself and Adam, as well as their team by a 4-3 scoreline.

Jaxx Q Club also came through a match which went the full distance with a 4-3 verdict at Matlock Golf Club. Kevin Holmes won his singles match and both scotch doubles frames, including the decider, partnered by Steve Robinson.

Also progressing were Gladiators Social Club of Matlock who defeated Matlock Club 6-1 with Guy Shirley and Mark Gwynne-Jones both unbeaten in all three of their frames.

The other semi finalists are  Marehay Miners Welfare did the business with a 4-2 home win over Matlock's Edgefold Club with Ben Monk and Lee Whatton each notching 32 breaks.

Elsewhere in a re-arranged league match, Gladiators Social Club earned their second success of the week with a 4-1 triumph at Jaxx Q Club of Belper, with Dave Gastrell notching the night's best break of 31.

TROY'S ON FIRE BUT IAN AND MARTIN SEE BOLEHILL HOME

DERBYSHIRE Under 21 champion TROY BRETT has been firing in the breaks.
TROY BRETT was in fine form this week with breaks of 58,44,34,27 and 24 in the space of three singles frames and a doubles frame  which were split either side of a 65 in practice!!
After winning his first round match in the Open Individual Handicap on the same evening, Troy took his place alongside the rest of the Gladiators Social Club team for their fixture at Bolehill Institute No 2.

The home side went 1-0 up early doors courtesy of a hard fought win by Martin Forster and this was doubled with a comfortable success from Ian Peacock.

Troy started the fightback though by coming back from the dead against Keith Robertson (who had earlier had a run of 29) to clinch an unlikely victory with the aforementioned half-century break.

And Dwayne Martin maintained his unbeaten run this season to square things up before previous victors Forster and Peacock prevailed in an exciting doubles climax to re-assert superiority for the hosts.

Bolehill's No 1 team also enjoyed a fruitful night, taking the spoils 4-1 at Belper Strutt Club No 2 with Simon Zoppi (27 break) top-scoring after Dave Needham had put the hosts in front early doors.

Belper Strutt Club No 1 maintained their winning form with a narrow 3-2 triumph at Matlock Club with Mark Newby and Mick McFall top scoring for their respective teams.

Jaxx Q Club, also from Belper, edged out Matlock Golf Club 3-2 on their travels with Steve Robinson and Paul Ogden amongst the breaks.

And there was another big points haul for Marehay Miners Welfare as they defeated Matlock's Edgefold Club 4-1 with Ben Monk's 44 top break.

WAYNE STRUTTS HIS STUFF FOR TABLE TOPPING BELPER

BELPER Strutt Club No 1 continued in great nick this week with a 3-2 win at Matlock's Edgefold Club to remain top of B Division.
Wayne Shooter top scored in his singles match and then took the deciding doubles frame, partnered by Mark Newby, after Duncan Harwood, courtesy of a superb 41 break, had squared things up in frame four.

Gladiators Social Club look to be strong challengers in the section too, also taking the spoils by the minimum margin at Bolehill Institute No 1.

MARK GWYNNE-JONES in action for Gladiators Social Club of Matlock.
Ricki Slack (29 break) got the hosts off to the best possible start but a black ball win from Troy Brett proved pivotal in the next and it was left to Mark Gwynne-Jones to seal the deal in the final frame of singles play.

Matlock Golf Club earned their second successive victory, this time 3-2 at Belper Strutt Club No 2.

Chris Parker returned to action in fine style winning both frames he was involved in, including the decisive doubles frame, partnered by Graham Jones.
Chris Stubbs continued his good form by top scoring for the home team.

Marehay Miners Welfare continue to lead the rest of A Division a merry dance, as Ben Monk with breaks of 40, 29 and 26 once again proved too hot to handle in a 5-0 dismantling of Bolehill Institute No 2.

Andrew Gratton took the second frame on the black and from thereon there was no looking back.

And in the remaining match, Jaxx Q Club of Belper edged out Matlock Club 3-2 as Jimmy Gratton and Hannah Jones took the concluding doubles frame on the final black in a real cliff-hanger.

Graham Jones also notched an excellent half century break in this week's OMYA Cup Individual quarter final match with Steve Bullock.

STAR man for Marehay Miners Welfare's table toppers this week, ANDREW GRATTON.
ANDREW GRATTON took man of the match billing as Marehay Miners Welfare maintained their lead at the top of A Division with a 3-2 success at Matlock's Gladiators Social Club.
Andrew hit breaks of 42, 32 and 20 to see off firstly Dave Gastrell in his singles match and then take his doubles match partnered by Ben Monk, who had earlier defeated Troy Brett in a black ball decider.
Vinnie Dennis (27 break) and Dwayne Martin were on target for the home team.

The Edgefold Club suffered only their second reverse of the season, being edged out 3-2 at Matlock Golf Club.
Graham Jones top scored for the hosts while Duncan Harwood won both frames he contested for the visitors.

THE BREAKS COME BEN'S WAY AS MAREHAY WIN AGAIN

BEN MONK ... topping the A Division highest break chart twice over.
BEN MONK, already holding the highest break so far in A Division with 39 prior to this week, improved on that with a contribution of 43 during Marehay Miners Welfare's 3-2 home win over Belper Strutt Club No 1.
Andrew Beardsley, returning to the fold for the hosts after a few years out, secured the win with a narrow success in frame three before a late rally inspired by Mark Newby saw the visitors close to within one frame at the finish.

There was a thriller at Bolehill Institute No 1 who edged out Matlock Golf Club 3-2 with Ricki Slack and Ian Birks taking the deciding doubles frame on the pink after Graham Jones had levelled matters aided by a 24 break in frame four.

Matlock's Edgefold Club continued in fine form, with a 3-2 victory at Belper Strutt Club No 2.
Neil Parkinson notched breaks of 22 and 20 and Rob Muxlow top scored for the visitors after Dave Needham had gotten the hosts off to a flyer in the opening frame.

PAUL AND GRAEME SEE MATLOCK CLUB INTO K.O. STAGES

PAUL HOLMES (left) and GRAEME WOOD's victories ensured Matlock Club's qualification.
THE TEAMS most under threat of elimination going into the final round of group matches in the Bob McCartin Six-Red Cup seemed to be Bolehill Institute No 2, Belper Strutt Club No 1 and Matlock Club.
Bolehill No 2 entertained Jaxx Q Club of Belper knowing a win was the minimum pre-requisite so falling 3-0 behind was not really on the agenda as Tim Maslin top scored for the visitors.

However, a spirited fight-back initiated by Keith Robertson saw them pull level before Paul Ogden and Kevin Holmes delivered the final nail in the coffin in the concluding scotch doubles frame.

Belper Strutt No 1 faced a tough task at current holders Marehay Miners Welfare and despite a plucky battle were defeated 5-2 as Ben Monk won all three frames he was involved in.

This left Matlock Club requiring two points from their remaining game at Matlock Golf Club, and this was achieved thanks to a fine win for Paul Holmes over twice Derbyshire champion Graham Jones and a black ball success for Graeme Wood.

This put them 2-1 ahead but the hosts rallied strongly thereafter to take the remaining frames with Ian McKay victorious in both his singles and two doubles matches.

The other game saw Gladiators Social Club edge out Bolehill Institute No 1 4-3 as Troy Brett and Vinnie Dennis took the deciding doubles match after remarkably all four singles matches had earlier been settled on the final black.

Bob McCartin 6-Red Cup group stages: Matlock Golf Club 5, Matlock Club 2; Gladiators SC 4, Bolehill Inst No 1 3; Bolehill Inst No 2 3, Jaxx Q Club Belper 4; Marehay MW / PJ'z 5, Belper Strutt No 1 2.
Breaks: R Slack / I Birks 25.

BOLEHILL No 1 INFLICT FIRST DEFEAT ON MAREHAY/PJ'z

IAN BIRKS provided the knockout blow for Bolehill Institute No 1 after Colin Marchington's win over Marehay danger man Ben Monk had put the home side 2-0 ahead.
A TRUNCATED programme of league matches this week due to illness and unavailability issues but there was still some excellent snooker played in the games that did take place.
Week four brought together last season's A Division winners and runners-up as Marehay Miners Welfare travelled to Bolehill Institute No 1 having enjoyed a barnstorming start to the campaign, dropping only one point in their opening three matches.

The hosts have been stuttering a little early doors so far but were off to a flying start as Ricki Slack and Colin Marchington gave them a 2-0 lead in defeating youngster Ryan Bowen and danger man Ben Monk respectively.

Andrew Gratton, with an early 28 break aiding his cause, reduced the arrears for the visitors in frame three but after a tense battle Ian Birks provided the knockout blow to make it 3-1 with a scorching long pot on the pink to overcome Lee Whatton.

Andrew and Ben did however secure the final doubles frame, Ben finding his feet late in the day with a 36 break which at least reduced the deficit to the minimum margin.

Elsewhere Bolehill Institute No 2 were also off to a flyer as Ian Peacock and Martin Forster put them 2-0 ahead at Belper Strutt Club No 1.

However, this only inspired a great fightback as Paul Jarrett, Steve Bullock and then Paul and partner Mark Newby in the concluding doubles saw them turn things around for a 3-2 victory.

Matlock's Edgefold Club continued their impressive form with a 4-1 win over Belper's Jaxx Q Club.
Rob Muxlow  with breaks of 33 and 22 won both frames he was involved in while Richard Ferguson continued his comeback by topscoring.
Steve Robinson earned the sole point for the visitors.

And in the OMYA Cup individual scratch competition qualifying finals, there were two half century break makers as Jimmy Gratton with 53 and Ricki Slack with 50 made it through to the winners stage in straight frames.

League week 4 results: Bolehill Institute No 1 3, Marehay Miners Welfare / PJ'z 2; Belper Strutt Club No 1 3, Bolehill Institute No 2 2; Edgefold Matlock 4, Jaxx Q Club Belper 1.
Breaks: J Gratton 53,38,34; R Slack 50,22; B Monk 36; R Muxlow 33,22;

MAREHAY/PJ'z CONTINUE THEIR MERRY WAY AT THE TOP

THE third week of the league season saw Marehay Miners Welfare continue their merry way at the top of A Division with a 4-1 home success over Matlock Golf Club.
Ben Monk led the way with breaks of  39,28,26,24 and 22 and Lee Whatton's black ball win in frame three ensured the victory before Graham Jones earned the sole point for the visitors.

Gladiators Social Club have also made a promising start to the campaign and this continued with a 5-0 win over Matlock Club as Troy Brett with runs of 27,24 and 22 emerged victorious from both his singles and doubles matches.

Another team going well are Belper Strutt Club No 2, for whom Adam Winson notched a century points haul and Chris Stubbs knocked in a 24 break in a 4-1 success over Bolehill Institute No 2. Only Ian Peacock with a couple of contributions of 20 could stem the tide for the hosts.

The all-Belper derby went the way of Jaxx Q Club courtesy of a 3-2 triumph at Strutt Club No 1 thanks in part to Kevin Holmes who notched a run of 25 whilst winning both frames he was involved in including the decisive doubles match at the end. Mark Newby earlier top scored for the hosts.

And in the remaining game, Matlock's Edgefold Club also took the spoils by the minimum margin as captain Neil Parkinson top scored against visitors Bolehill Institute No 1, for whom Ricki Slack's efforts of 29 and 24 weren't quite enough to tip the scales on the night.

TWO BOOK THEIR PLACE IN 6-RED KNOCKOUT STAGES

THE second round of group matches took place in the Bob McCartin 6-Red Cup this week and two teams are safely through to the knockout stages.
The Edgefold Club scored a crushing 7-0 success over Bolehill Institute No 2 which gave them 11 points from 2 games and put them in an unassailable position in Group C.

Whilst in Group B, Belper Strutt Club No 2 did enough in their 4-3 defeat to Marehay to ensure a place in the next stage as well as fielding seven players on the night which is surely a record in the Darley Dale and District League's history!
Jay Rowland and Lee Whatton stayed calm to edge the deciding scotch doubles match at the death.

Group A remains tightly knit as Matlock Golf Club edged out Bolehill No 1 4-3 with Chris Drabble notching a 24 break and Gladiators Social Club defeating Matlock Club 5-2 with Dwayne Martin doing likewise both in his singles and scotch doubles match (partnered by Vinnie Dennis).

Bob McCartin 6-Red Cup group stages: Matlock Club 2, Gladiators SC 5; Matlock Golf Club 4, Bolehill Inst No 1 3; Edgefold Matlock 7, Bolehill Inst No 2 0; Belper Strutt No 2 3, Marehay MW / PJ'z 4.

BARRAGE OF BREAKS SECURES GLADIATORS LEAGUE WIN

THE BUSIEST week for some time in the DDD Snooker League saw a full programme of league games complemented by a couple of re-arranged 6 Red Cup group matches taking place.
And strangely all teams involved in the double headers ended up winning in one competition while being defeated in the other discipline.

Gladiators Social Club were in fine form for their home game with Edgefold, scoring a 4-1 success with a barrage of breaks from Troy Brett (38,33), Dwayne Martin (37,24) and Dave Gastrell (24) being too much for the visitors to handle.

But they were narrowly defeated 4-3 by Matlock Golf Club in the 6 red Cup as Charlie Hodgkinson and Ian McKay secured the decisive frame courtesy of a 25 break in the scotch doubles.

The Golf Club themselves had earlier been defeated 4-1 in the League however at Belper Strutt Club No 1 who bounced back from a couple of defeats to their No 2 team with Wayne Shooter securing the victory in frame four.

Meanwhile Edgefold's players had their own taste of success at Belper's Jaxx Q Club with a 4-3 win in the 6 Red Cup. Neil Parkinson set the ball rolling with a 23 break in the opening frame and the game was safe by the time Steve Robinson and debutante Hannah Jones knocked in a superb 44 break in the scotch doubles which puts them in pole position to lift the Presidents Cup prize even at this early stage.

Jaxx themselves bounced back to edge out Belper Strutt Club No 2 3-2 in the league with Jimmy Gratton and Hannah again winning the decisive doubles match at the end.

Elsewhere in the Bolehill derby, it was the No 2 team who came out on top also by the minimum margin as Ian Peacock and Martin Forster impressed in winning both their singles and doubles matches.

And Marehay Miners Welfare / PJ'z continued in barnstorming form with a 5-0 win at Matlock Club, with Ben Monk  notching a 38 break to set the tempo for the evening.

In the OMYA Cup individual scratch competition qualifiers, Jimmy Gratton also scored a 68 break in his win over fellow Jaxx player Steve Robinson.

TOM AND MATT BRING HOME THE BACON FOR EDGEFOLD

THE first official week of the league season saw the tightest match played out at Matlock's Edgefold Club who came from 2-1 behind to defeat Bolehill Institute No 2 in a thriller.
Tom Chambers and Matthew Travis were the stars for the home team, notching 23 and 20 breaks respectively in the concluding doubles match after Keith Robertson had recorded a break of 29 for the visitors when levelling matters.

Champions PJ'z of Ripley are currently playing from Marehay Miners Welfare until their own club re-opens, and they laid down an ominous marker for the season with a 5-0 triumph over Jaxx Q Club of Belper.
Ben Monk, as ever, was in blistering form during the evening with breaks of 35 and 32 although he was pushed all the way in the opening frame by Tim Maslin, eventually winning it on the black.

The other two matches that went ahead featured teams who had met only last week in the Six Red Cup and on each occasion the form was confirmed.

Belper Strutt Club No 2 were pushed closer by the No 1 team this week but still emerged 3-2 winners, with Chris Stubbs and Stewart Jackson knocking in breaks of 24 and 25 respectively to seal the deal in the third and fourth frames.

And at Bolehill Institute, the No 1 team overcame Matlock Club 4-1 with Ian Birks the widest margin victor for the hosts and Graeme Wood producing an excellent individual performance for the visitors.

The travelling team gained some compensation by winning the remaining frame carried over from the previous week's six red cup affair to reduce the final arrears of that encounter to the minimum margin (this had been due to illness in the camp to one of their players last week).

League week 1 results: Edgefold Club Matlock 3, Bolehill Inst No 2 2; Marehay MW / PJ'z 5, Jaxx Q Club Belper 0; Belper Strutt Club No 2 3, Belper Strutt Club No 1 2; Bolehill Inst No 1 4, Matlock Club 1.
Breaks: B Monk 35,32; K Robertson 29; S Jackson 25; C Stubbs 24;

STRUTT CLUB No 2 OFF TO A FLYER IN SIX RED CUP

THE NEW season of the DDD Snooker League got underway last week with the Bob McCartin 6-Red Cup's main feature being the local derby between the two teams from Belper Strutt Club.
And it was the No 2 team who usurped the No 1 team with a fine 5-2 victory, the highlight of which was a 22 break in the scotch doubles section from newcomer Chris Stubbs and his partner Adam Winson.

Earlier in the night Andrew Hopkinson, grandson of long standing league custodian Alan, also made a successful debut to set his team on the right track and there was no looking back thereafter.

At Bolehill Institute, the No 1 team hosted Matlock Club and with the visitors hit by a late illness to one of their players, only six frames were played with one held over.

The spoils went to the home team 4-2 with Andrew Brough in impressive form in the singles and Keith Manlove winning both scotch doubles frames he contested.

Due to a football match at Causeway Lane, Gladiators Social Club brought forward their league match at Matlock Golf Club and were narrowly defeated 3-2 with Chris Parker top scoring for the hosts.

Results - 6 Red Cup: Belper Strutt Club No 1 2, Belper Strutt Club No 2 5; Bolehill Inst No 1 4, Matlock Club 2. League: Matlock Golf Club 3, Gladiators SC 2. Breaks: C Stubbs / A Winson 22.

If level, preferred criteria is (in this order): 1. Most wins (where same no. of games are played),  2. Most points taken out of matches between the tied teams, 3. Most points taken from the highest placed team in the group down to the next highest and so on until there is a clear winner, 4. The team winning most singles matches over the group campaign per ratio, 5. The team winning most singles matches in the fixture between the tied teams, 6. If still level the team with most 20+ breaks per frame ratio, 7. A play off if all else fails. All fixtures must be completed before a team is eligible to qualify for next round.

N.B. The original Pairs Trophy the Presidents Cup has been recovered after being presumed lost for the last few years,  so we agreed at the last meeting to award it to the scotch doubles pair recording the highest break during the season whatever the competition.

NEWS FROM THE REGISTRATION MEETING

JUST TIME FOR A QUICK UPDATE from the registration meeting.
We have ten teams for the 2012/13 season which we split into two divisions of five each.
Obviously with two of last season's B Division teams PJ'z Ripley No 2 and Jaxx Q Club Belper No 2 not taking part this time around, this meant we needed one extra team for the section.

The only possible candidates were either Gladiators Social Club which is the bulk of the old Bolehill No 2 team from last season who finished next highest in A Division over the relegated teams or Jaxx Q Club Belper No 1 who finished runners up in the second tier last season.

Anyhow after a vote it was decided that Gladiators play as a B team this season as Jaxx had further re-enforced their team (including a certain J Gratton as a reserve!) and had already been multi trophy winners to boot last season.

It shouldn't make a whole load of difference anyhow as all teams will play each other home and away during the season this time around with just the individual sections treated separately for prizegiving purposes.

As mentioned on facebook, last seasons team from PJ'z No 1 will at least initially be playing from Marehay Miners Welfare with their usual club having been closed for a period and set to re-open in nearby premises (but not now expected until the New Year).

After this the handicaps were discussed and agreed for the forthcoming season, again mainly updated automatically from last season with one or two minor adjustments elsewhere.

It was again agreed to hold the Christmas Shootout Night at Jaxx Q Club, Belper, the establishment permitting, theres a date in early January which might suit, most likely being a clear week, but will discuss it with Scott the owner and see how it fits in.

Also all were in agreement to revive if possible the old regular inter league clash between ourselves and the Derby League; at present a date in late May looks favourite when both leagues are completed but will see what comes out of discussions with our big-city neighbours regarding how it will be played and when and where (I'm particularly looking forward to the J Gratton (Darley Dale) v J Gratton (Derby) clash, especially if one of them has to give a start!).

Regarding this season's B Division Individual Handicap, with the loss of the two teams and only a small entry last season (as tends to be the case with most restricted events in todays age) we decided that it should also be open to all those players handicapped as scratch or below whichever division they are registered in, which should hopefully help to boost the numbers.

As mentioned on our facebook page, you may have noticed that the old pairs trophy the Presidents Cup has been re-discovered after being presumed lost. Rather than just leave it in limbo, we thought it would be a good idea to use it for the forthcoming season and in keeping with the pairs theme, it will now be awarded to the scotch doubles pairing which make the highest break during the season in all competitions (therefore incorporating the Bob McCartin 6-red Cup, the George Mills Christmas 6-red Pairs on Shootout Night and also the Hartshorne Cup 2-man team event, where the format comes into effect in the event of a deciding frame).

We decided not to hold any formal meetings during the season due to general lack of attendance, so the competition draws will now take place at a date and time stated on this website, providing more than one person is present (most probably at Bolehill in the main).

The end of season Play Offs for the Jaeger Trophy will still be contested between the four top teams in each Division, so eight in all, with home advantage firstly to the highest placed team in the regular season.
Should any of the matches in the next stage involve teams who have not had a home fixture however, they would be granted this privilege over a team who had already hosted in fairness to participating clubs.
As usual the final will be played on a neutral table.

The draws were also done for the qualifying stages of the OMYA Individual Scratch competition played in-house firstly down to one qualifier per team, along with the Bob McCartin 6-red team event.
The latter will again be run initially on a group basis as those at the meeting enjoyed the format last year so this stage enables all matches to be played to their completion.

Plus it gives a chance for teams who don't hit the ground running to find their form later on in the knockout stages, as most teams should at least be in with a chance of qualification going into the final batch of games.

Obviously with two less teams this season, the end of season prize fund will most likely have to be adjusted accordingly though it may be that only a couple of the more minor competitions are affected (depending on overall income after competition entries).

The Presentation Evening next Saturday September 1st looks roughly on course for the same number of attendees as last season, tickets are still available at £5 each. A reminder that Alan is requesting team captains bring along a raffle prize if possible.

Finally thanks to all teams for entering the League for the 2012/13 season and hope you all have a good 'un.
I know quite a few were scrambling around to get hold of that elusive fourth player so thats something we appreciate and will keep an eye on over time as regarding numbers - there may eventually be a stage where we send out a 3-man and a 4-man entry form and see which works best as obviously there aren't quite so many people hitting the clubs as there used to be just from popping in and out of some of the local haunts.

But sometimes dropping down a man doesn't always result in an automatic extra team as we seem to run into   the problem that no-one wants to take the responsibility to run the team, even though there doesn't seem a whole lot to it to alot of those that actually do the job!!

Plus of course, we are living in an age of multiple choices and some youngsters seem to be venturing into pool over snooker nowadays as the option with the lesser degree of difficulty!

All the best and you will note the OMYA Individual and Bob McCartin 6 red team draws are now up on this website, the leaguesnooker.co.uk site will also swing back into action over the next couple of weeks and once some minor details are rubber-stamped and known, the league fixtures can be sent out, cheers!!
