JUSTIN FIRES A TRIO OF THIRTIES IN DOUBLES FINAL WIN

CHRIS STUBBS and JUSTIN WELLER Pairs Handicap winners 2014/15
THE DENIS Morton Pairs Handicap Trophy final saw an all-Strutt Club final with last seasons runners-up Steve Bullock and Mark Newby up against old adversary Chris Stubbs (part of the winning partnership then) and his new sidekick Justin Weller.
And it was Weller who hit the ground running on what was a memorable night for him with a 31 break deciding the opener 62-34 before Newby equalised with a great pot on the black in the next.
And the turning point maybe came in frame three when a seemingly excellent long pot from Bullock seemed to have edged them ahead until the cue ball agonisingly rolled straight into a baulk pocket to turn joy into despair.
Weller moved in again with a run of 38 to make it 3-1 but their opponents hung on to take a close fifth frame and pull it back to 3-2.
But once again Weller stepped up to the plate and his 37 break made sure there was no comeback this time, taking the frame 79-23 and the match 4-2.

The Jaeger Trophy Playoffs also started this week and the lower seeds proved a real thorn in the side of the higher ranked teams as only Bolehill No 2, courtesy of a walkover with Edgefold No 2 mistaking the date they were due to play, getting through.

Champions Edgefold No 1 fell for a second time to Matlock Cons in quick succession, having also been defeated by them in the Captains Cup. This time the Cons took  a 4-1 verdict with Chris Parker's 44 break the highlight in the opener and despite Rob Muxlow equalising, Nick Kay delivered the decisive leg.

Matlock Club earned their biggest win of the season, 5-0 at Bolehill No 1 with Graeme Wood (on the black), Keith Manlove and Mick Mackfall reeling off the opening three frames to decide the issue.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood also progressed, defeating Belper Strutt No 1 3-1 after Paul Jarrett had put the hosts in front. Andrew Beardsley equalised and Jamie Rowland sealed the deal.

Denis Morton Pairs Handicap Trophy final: Chris Stubbs / Justin Weller 4, Steve Bullock / Mark Newby 2.
Jaeger Trophy Play offs 1st round: Edgefold Matlock No 1 1, Matlock Cons 4; Bolehill Institute No 1 0, Matlock Club 5; Belper Strutt No 1 1, Alfreton Palmer Morewood 3; Bolehill Institute No 2 w/o, Edgefold Matlock No 2 scr (mistook match-night and no free dates to re-arrange).

CONS THWART CUP HOLDERS' REPEAT SUCCESS BID

MATLOCK CONS - L-R: Nick Kay, Charlie Hodgkinson, Jack Lynch, Chris Parker,
Gareth Johnson and Richard Deakin - Captains Cup winners 2014/15.
MAIN focus of the week was the Captains Cup Team Aggregate competition final as Belper Strutt No 1 were attempting to retain their trophy up against Matlock Cons at Bolehill Institute.
Ben Monk took the last three balls to edge a tight opener, 81-58 against Nick Kay to take revenge for his recent league defeat to the same player but Gareth Johnson ground out a 60-42 scoreline over Paul Jarrett to keep Cons on terms in the next.
Neither player really found their rhythm in the next but Mark Newby took pink and black to shade it 68-66 and keep the Belper side with their noses in front.
However, a man of the match display from Charlie Hodgkinson who turned back the clock for one of his vintage displays of yesteryear, earned an 87-41 success over Steve Bullock to leave Cons 39 ahead going into the doubles leg.
Here Richard Deakin and Jack Lynch produced a mature display of matchplay to keep dangerman Monk and partner Wayne Shooter at bay and earn a 50-45 victory and an overall 321-277 verdict.

The only other action came in the Jimmy Harper Plate semi finals, which resulted in wins for Bolehill Institute No 1 and Belper Strutt No 2.
Bolehill 1 defeated Edgefold No 2 357-242 in what was probably their best overall performance of the season as Ian Birks and Andrew Brough played starring roles with big points tallies.
Strutt 2 saw off Matlock Club 305-256 with Justin Weller crucially amassing 118 points after Keith Manlove had put the visitors in a decent position after frame three.

OMYA CUP WIN FOR SLACK AND STRUTT 1 TAKE SECOND

OMYA CUP (Individual Scratch) finalists RICKI SLACK and ANDY RUSSELL
THE OMYA Cup (Individual Scratch) final took place at Matlock Club this week resulting  in a 4-1 success for Bolehill Institute's Ricki Slack over the season's most prolific winning player, Edgefold's Andy Russell.
Slack hit the ground running in the opener with breaks of 35 and 28 setting the tone before taking a more cagey frame on the green after Russell had needed all the remaining colours to tie.
Slack again led by 14 with the last three balls remaining in the next but despite spurning a gilt edged chance on an easy blue through over-stretching, it wasn't long before he despatched a much tougher shot on his next visit for 3-0.
Russell found his feet in the next with a storming long pot on the brown reducing the arrears but again his opponent held sway in frame five and once taking the black with the final red (along with yellow and green) Slack was home and hosed for his fourth win in the events history.
Thanks are extended to Mick Mackfall for preparing the table and undertaking refereeing duties along with his assistant and Neil Parkinson who each did smaller stints.

The runners-up spot and play off placings were also up for grabs in the final scheduled  round of J K Interiors and Joinery Services League matches.

Jaxx Q Club went under 4-1 at Matlock Cons, who sneak in to the play offs as no 8 seed accordingly with Charlie Hodgkinson and Nick Kay top scoring after Devon Neave had given the visitors an early lead.

This left Bolehill No 2 needing a 4-1 win at Belper Strutt No 1 to reclaim second spot after holding that mantle for most of the season but it was the hosts who held firm thanks to a 3-2 verdict.
Ben Monk edged Mark Sayer in the first before Ian Peacock (24 break) equalised and then Mark Newby and Mick Bunting shared the following frames leaving the match resting on the final pairs leg.
Wayne Shooter and Newby took this 52-30 to give the hosts 14 wins out of 18 for the season.

Cons had also been in winning action earlier in the week with a vital 4-1 success at Matlock Club, with Richard Deakin top scoring after Graeme Wood had amassed 91 points for the hosts in the opener.

Rob Dicken was in good form as Edgefold No 2 triumphed 4-1 at Alfreton Palmer Morewood (no further details through as yet) and Bolehill No 1 received a walkover as Belper Strutt No 2 were reportedly unable to field a team to travel on any of the remaining available dates.

No 1 TEAM MOVE INTO SECOND PLACE AFTER DERBY WIN

PAUL JARRETT was on the ball for BELPER STRUTT No 1
THE STRUTT Club derby resulted in an emphatic 5-0 victory for the No 1 team who moved into the runners-up spot with just one week of matches remaining in the J K Interiors & Joinery Services League.
Wayne Shooter, Paul Jarrett and Steve Bullock reeled off consecutive frames to make the match secure before the icing on the cake was provided by Mark Newby, who won both his singles and doubles frames, latterly with Bullock.
The No 2 team could only total 103 points in the match, such was the dominance of their counterparts.

Bolehill No 2 dropped to third after losing 3-2 to champions elect Edgefold No 1 with Mick Bunting and Andy Russell top scoring respectively.

Jaxx Q Club also went under 3-2 to Matlock Club for whom Dave Allen top scored after Jak Groom had equalised at 1-1, though they do still have an extra game to play in their favour.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood scored a magnificent 5-0 win at Matlock Cons to boost their play off hopes as Simon Mayes (33 break) and Kevin Rowland (31 break) were too hot to handle.

Elsewhere, Bolehill No 1 won the first three frames at Edgefold No 2 with Colin Marchington top scoring before Jodie McLarkey took both his singles and doubles legs (where he was partnered by Sean Dobney who notched a classy run of 33).
