BREAKS GALORE WITH JACK LOWE'S 81 TOPPING THE BILL

JACK LOWE ... personal record break

THERE were breaks galore as players used the holiday period to ramp up practice and produce some of the most prolific scoring of the year in the associated competitions running alongside the league.
Top of the pile was a magnificent 81 from Jack Lowe of Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 in edging out team-mate Carlos Zaragoza in the singles handicap, comfortably his highest in competitive play and vindicating the rapid improvement he has made since the end of last season, having already overtaken his winning tally for the entire season before half-way this time around.
The Bob McCartin Six Red Cup saw a semi final and the remaining quarter final played out to start the new year and it is Edgefold No1 who await their final opposition in the final after defeating Tansley Potters 4-1.
Richard Ferguson took the opener 45-33 and although Radford Neville equalised on the black, wins for Duncan Harwood and Steve Burton put the Matlock side on the cusp of victory.
And Ferguson teamed up with Rob Muxlow to seal the deal on the black in the first of scotch doubles legs, before an academic win for the visitors reduced the arrears to 4-2.

Still playing their quarter final round were Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 who entertained Bolehill No1, and the visitors looked in good nick, leading 3-1 after the conclusion of the singles legs.
Des Smith put the hosts into an early lead but wins for Colin Marchington, Ricki Slack and Simon Zoppi soon turned things around.
However,  Cole Smith laid a great snooker on pink in the first of the scotch doubles to set up victory, then potted match ball in the next before seeing Phil Longden slam in a fabulous long black in the decider with everything resting on it for a 4-3 comeback win.
The home team's tremendous battling spirit thus saw them taking pink and black to win each of the pairs legs in ultra-tight finishes and earn a trip to Clay Cross Brotherhood No1 in the semis.

There was also one T & M Motors Snooker League clash, but it was a big one with Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 defeating leaders Edgefold No2 3-2 meaning they now sit just four points adrift in second place with a game in hand.
Paul Sainsbury convincingly took the opener 71-37 though Scott Brooks levelled in similar tone with a 72-45 riposte.
Leading 45-0 early doors, Martin Barwick then inflicted the first league defeat on man of the moment Jack Lowe but only on the final black after a thrilling comeback fell just short 77-70.
Lowe was then drawn out to play again with the hosts a man down and he put his table time to good use to earn a 101-25 success and level at 2-2.
And it was Lowe (who on balance receives the Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week mantle) and Sainsbury who steered the home side's ship home as they secured a 64-31 win in the deciding pairs frame.

In the Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League, Bolehill Institute narrowly defeated Whitworth Institute 10-9 with wins for Jim McCann and Ricki Slack respectively.

ANDREW THE SHOOTOUT SPECIALIST STRIKES YET AGAIN!

ANDREW HAGGARTY ... speed king

CLAY CROSS BROTHERHOOD took centre stage as a new venue for the annual Christmas Shootout night but as sure as night follows day, again it was Alfreton Palmer Morewood's Andrew Haggarty who confirmed himself as the ultimate Yuletide specialist by taking the Eddie Lomas Trophy for an incredible FIFTH time as well as lifting the Alan Hopkinson Trophy for a second time, having also done the same double back in 2016.
An excellent turnout of 26, only two short of last season's record breaking entry, convened upon Broadleys for the trio of quickfire handicap knockout competitions, comprising of six red singles and scotch doubles handicaps and the popular speed test of clearing of the colours in head to head rounds (also handicapped).
Andrew Haggarty was clear favourite beforehand for the speed event having already tasted glory in 2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022 and his chances were enhanced after receiving a bye in the opening round with his opponent having to leave early (maybe he had heard of his reputation!)
After this wins over Ricki Slack, John Smith and Jack Lowe saw him to the final against  Alfreton No2's Paul Sainsbury, who himself had come through with flying colours defeating Brian Fullard, John Roseman, Ian McKay and Callum Greenfield.
But in the final showdown, experience counted and the cool approach of Haggarty won the day with something to spare, making it a fantastic nap hand in the event as the owls began to hoot Christmas tunes outside.

The victor was already floating on cloud nine, having taking the main singles event earlier in the evening, where he came up against local favourite Lee Hage in the final.
Haggarty had defeated Reece Johnstone, Duane Parsons and Matt Large to reach the big stage after receiving a first round bye while opponent Hage had come through against John Smith, Duncan Harwood, Rob Muxlow and Steve Bullock.
Hage held the advantage with pink and black left but a fine long pot from the Alfreton cueman left it resting on the final ball, and despite a perfectly adequate safety riposte from the home town player, Haggarty cut the black sublimely into the corner pocket from long range to cheers from his supportive team-mates.

COLE SMITH and SCOTT BROOKS, pairs champs

A great day for the Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 team was rounded off when youngster Cole Smith partnered Edgefold No 2's Scott Brooks to victory in the George Mills Trophy for the scotch doubles.
Wins over the Jack Lowe/Steve Bullock, Ricki Slack/Conrad Spencer and Roy Taylor/Alex Fisher combinations saw them into the final up against local boys Callum Greenfield and Andrew Bailey of Clay Cross No2 team.
The latter pair had overcome Rob Muxlow and Martin Barwick plus Reece Johnstone and Brian Fullard after a first round bye.
However, Brooks and Smith took control on the colours in the final showdown and leaving their opponents needing a snooker on pink and black, they eventually entered the winners roster for the first time each in this event.

DUNCAN'S GREATEST HITS ARE TOTTING UP ON CAMERA

DUNCAN HARWOOD ... highest competition break of 70

EDGEFOLD No1's DUNCAN HARWOOD recorded his highest break in competition play with a magnificent run of 70 in the opening frame of his Open Individual Handicap second round tie with team mate Rob Muxlow which he eventually came through 3-2.
With the break recorded in all its glory on the resident CCTV, Duncan joked that DVDs were on sale for a limited time only, but it actually proved handy as the referee had originally miscounted one short.
This was comfortably the Edgefold cueman's top break in league or cup play but he has been a consistent team prize-winner over the years and also notched a trio of trophy successes in the pairs handicap and individual successes in both the "B" Individual Handicap in 2017 and Christmas 6 reds Handicap in 2021.
Another claim to fame is defeating ex professional Nigel Bond in an exhibition at Edgefold Club when clearing the colours, again caught on camera, so definitely well on the way to a visual record of his greatest hits!!

LATEST COMPETITION DRAWS FOR JANUARY 2026

THE draws for the next rounds of the individual, pairs and team competitions were made recently.

As agreed by the committee, dates will be put on the matches again this season, though you can of course play them in advance of the set date by re-arranging with your opponent (please give at least 48hrs notice and preferably more). 7.30pm start unless stated or else agreed differently prior to match.
If absolutely necessary, you can re-schedule it within an extra 7 days, failing agreement you can apply to the match secretary for a further 7 days to play it.
If someone doesn't contact the opposition and then fails to show, they are eliminated obviously.
Contact relevant team captains or the secretary for any required contact info.
Dates will be added for later rounds when match ups become known.
Matches to be played off the latest handicaps on the scheduled date of the ties (if any are delayed and handicaps change subsequently, the original match handicap will stand).
Matches to take place as drawn for the semi finals, and finals will take place at selected neutral venues or if agreed, toss of a coin for venue between parties, all matches best of 5 this season with finals best of 7 (except "B" final which is best of 5).
Note that substitute players switching over from teams in same club are not eligible to play in team semi finals or finals.

EDGEFOLD No1 & CLAY CROSS No1 TAKE TIGHT BATTLES

ROB MUXLOW partnered Richard Ferguson to victory

A TRIO of Bob McCartin Six Red Cup quarter finals took place in the last week and there were a couple of thrillers with one of them seeing Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 entertain Edgefold No1 in what looked one of the ties of the round beforehand.
Rob Muxlow took the opener for the visitors 50-14 before Jack Lowe (23 break) replied for the hosts with a similar win of 42-13.
The next two were again shared with Adam Cupit earning a 39-25 victory and Steve Burton's 39 break instrumental in a 51-0 verdict for 2-2.
Lowe and Cupit then teamed up for a 45-24 success to nudge the home side ahead but a black ball win for Richard Ferguson and Duncan Harwood left everything resting on the decider.
And in a tense finale, it was Ferguson and Muxlow who came through with a fluke on the blue paving the way for victory with pink resting over the pocket as they took it 38-20.

The all-Clay Cross encounter also went down to the wire with the No1 team going ahead early doors thanks to a 41-10 win for Duane Parsons and Graham Jones' 39-14 victory soon making it two.
However, John Roseman with a 41-18 verdict and then Damian Woodward with a 31-6 scoreline pulled the No2 team level going into the three scotch doubles legs.
Jones and Duncan Waring took the first of these on the black to edge the No1 team back in front before a 44-8 riposte from Matt Large and Mark Bower levelled it up again.
But after a hard fought battle, the No1 paring of Waring and Ian McKay pulled their team through with a 33-20 deciding victory in another cliffhanger.

The other tie played saw Tansley Potters defeat Bolehill Institute No2 5-2.
Dale Shaw put the visitors into an early lead but consecutive successes for Radford Neville, Joe and Steve Hawkins put the home side into a commanding position after the singles legs.
Mick Bunting and Paul Young took the first of the scotch doubles 43-32 however but success for Steve and Joe Hawkins in the sixth frame sealed the deal before the home side took an academic last leg.

In the competitions, apart from Duncan Harwood's excellent run of 70 (see separate post), Ben Monk hit a fine break of 42 despite ultimate defeat to Paul Trevett (Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week) in the individual handicap, with the latter also progressing convincingly in the pairs handicap with Nick Berry.

The Billiards Captains Cup semi final between Whitworth Institute and Bolehill Institute produced a nail-biting finale right down to the last minute of play, with Jim McCann (breaks of 48 and 42) edging his side ahead by seven points in the aggregate-decided contest before an untimely miscue saw Ricki Slack step in with an unfinished run of 18 when time elapsed for an overall 11-point victory (the exact margin by which Andrew Brough had taken the opener).

PAUL AND NICK GUIDE COMRADES TO WIN AT EDGEFOLD 3

NICK BERRY

THERE was an opportunity for a couple of teams in the lower reaches of the T & M Motors Snooker League to kick start their seasons as Edgefold No3 entertained Crich Comrades with each team level on points nearing the half-way stage of proceedings.
Sam Kniveton had the hosts off to a flyer with a 55-39 win before Paul Trevett levelled in the next.
Conrad Spencer nudged the Edgefold cuemen back in front in frame three but again it was all square as Nick Berry produced his performance of the season to take the fourth frame 67-2.
And the two victors, Trevett and Berry carried the Tramwaymen to a 3-2 overall victory as they held sway in the decisive doubles leg.

Playing upstairs on the same evening, Edgefold No1 defeated Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 3-2 after a hard fought extended battle.
Rob Muxlow's black ball win in frame two equalised Andrew Bailey's early strike, and similarly the next two frames were shared with Steve Burton for the hosts and John Roseman for the visitors scoring confident successes.
So once again it was the pairs leg to decide and Burton and Muxlow stepped forward to deliver the win by a scoreline of 67-38.

Edgefold No2 continued their march at the top of the table as they took an excellent 5-0 victory on their travels to Clay Cross Brotherhood No1.
Reece Johnstone and Josh Dakin both secured convincing wins to set them on their way and Martin Barwick's full length double on the deciding black sealed the deal in the next after a strong fightback from well adrift by Duncan Waring.
Dakin stepped up again to defy the extra handicap with the visitors short on the night and then Barwick and Johnstone completed the whitewash in the doubles contest.

Also securing maximum points were Tansley Potters as they moved second thanks to a 5-0 defeat of Belper Royal British Legion.
Joe Neville maintained his undefeated run, extending it to nine games with a convincing 51-10 success to complement son Radford's earlier register, and the father-and-son combination worked to similar effect as the Hawkins, Steve and Joe, took frames three and four before combining in the four-hander to complete the nap hand.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No2 are five points behind the leaders with a game in hand after their 4-1 win at Bolehill No1.
Jack Lowe took the opener 66-24 for his eighth consecutive triumph, before Colin Marchington levelled for the home side in a tight battle 57-45.
A high quality game swung to and fro in the next before Adam Cupit potted an excellent long pink to take it 60-52 and with his team short, pitched up again in the next in full swing with breaks of 38 and 20 to defy the extra handicap and make it 3-1 with a 93-25 verdict.
And the in-form individual winners teamed up to great effect in the pairs leg, freezing out their opponents to take a 51-12 success.

JOSH HITS HALF CENTURY BREAK IN COMPETITION PLAY

EDGEFOLD No2 bounced back from last week's defeat with business as usual as they produced a fine performance in defeating Alfreton Palmer Morewood No1 4-1 to share top spot in the T & M Motors Snooker League with Belper Royal British Legion, but still with a game in hand.
Josh Dakin, fresh from making a superb 59 break in individual competition, took the opener 66-36 with a run of 20 earning himself the Clay Cross Brotherhood sponsored Player of the Week mantle and Martin Barwick added the next 76-54 to make it two.
Phil Longden, with his eighth win in nine outings, pulled one back with a 69-56 verdict but Reece Johnstone and then the Dakin/Barwick combination both delivered black ball successes to make it a successful night for the home team.

Belper Royal British Legion took maximum points from a 5-0 win over Edgefold No3.
Mark Newby got the ball rolling for the hosts, and has now conceded only eight points in his last two frames, before Wayne Shooter doubled the lead with a 53-32 victory.
A black ball success 51-50 thanks to Steve Bullock put the game to bed before Justin Weller added the fourth and then teamed up with Newby to complete the whitewash.

Clay Cross Brotherhood No2 leapt into third place, capitalising on a reduced programme of fixtures, with their own 5-0 win over Crich Comrades.
Callum Greenfield and Lee Shaw had the hosts off to a flyer with convincing victories and John Roseman's 25 break contributed to him making it three.
Andrew Bailey with a 67-41 success completed a clean sweep of singles legs and the doubles went the same way when Shaw teamed up with Damian Woodward to take a tight final frame.

The local derby at Bolehill eventually went to form, but only just with the No1 team having to come twice from behind.
Dale Shaw produced his best performance of the season for the No2 cuemen to take the first frame 73-17 before Colin Marchington levelled in the next 59-43.
Paul Young with a 71-37 scoreline put the underdogs back in front and with Ricki Slack losing his tip before a shot had been played in the next, an upset seemed possible.
But a 25 break borrowing Marchington's cue saw him take a 67-26 triumph before teaming up with the man himself, sharing the seemingly magical implement between them for a 75-28 win.

In the Classic Gas Bodyshop Billiards League, Keith Gregory was in blistering form taking a 150-0 victory as Mayfield Institute defeated Whitworth Institute 11-7.
