COMPETITION DRAWS FOR DECEMBER AND JANUARY

THE draws for the early rounds of the individual competitions and semi finals of the six red team cup were made recently.
As agreed by the committee, dates will be put on the matches again this season, though you can of course play them in advance of the set date by re-arranging with your opponent (please give at least 48hrs notice and preferably more). 7.30pm start unless stated or else agreed differently prior to match.
If absolutely necessary, you can re-schedule it within an extra 7 days, failing agreement you can apply to the match secretary for a further 7 days to play it.
If someone doesn't contact the opposition and then fails to show, they are eliminated obviously.
Contact relevant team captains or the secretary for any required contact info.
Dates will be added for later rounds when match ups become known.
Matches to be played off the latest handicaps on the scheduled date of the ties (if any are delayed and handicaps change subsequently, the original match handicap will stand).
Matches to take place as drawn for the semi finals, and finals will take place at selected neutral venues or if agreed, toss of a coin for venue between parties, all matches best of 5 this season with finals best of 7 (except "B" final which is best of 5).
Note that substitute players switching over from teams in same club are not eligible to play in team semi finals or finals.

NIGEL IS BACK TO WHERE IT ALL STARTED FOR CHARITY

NIGEL BOND (second from right) with challengers from Edgefold Club.
AS WELL as the usual schedule of weekly fixtures, several players from the league also tried their luck for charity against professional player Nigel Bond, once of the League himself, at the Edgefold Club, and though none were successful, the night itself was a great success raising a princely sum for Mentell, the mens mental health charity.
It also provided a rare chance to witness a top sportsman at close quarters locally, who duly delivered with nine breaks of 55 and over including a 96 in the twelve frames he contested.
Thanks go to organiser Sean Dobney for his unwavering efforts in making the event happen and also of course to Nigel himself, now sponsored by local firm Bulldog Billiards, for giving up his valuable time before the UK Championship and putting on such a sterling show.

JOSH SHOWS PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE AS HE ROMPS TO WIN

JOSH LEE... inaugural singles win
PRIDE of place this week goes to Edgefold Club's Josh Lee who contested the COVID delayed 19/20 Open Individual Handicap final against Bolehill's Keith Robertson and ran out a ready 4-1 winner to mark his inaugural singles victory.
Successful what seems many moons ago in previous rounds against Paul Trevett (3-2), Andrew Haggarty (3-2), Rob Muxlow (3-1) and Ady Lowe (3-1), Josh turned in a polished display to pocket the coveted prize.
Despite there being a further delay of an hour as his opponent had confused dates, Lee was straight into his stride to race 3-0 ahead before Robertson pulled one back in an uphill struggle to get back into the match.
But Lee was in no mood to falter by now and another solid performance in frame five saw him home.

Meanwhile, the Bob McCartin Six Red Cup had reached the final round of group matches and Alfreton No 1 topped Group C on the most wins rule after seeing off Bolehill No 2 5-2 who were thus eliminated.
Des Smith added yet another consecutive win to his impressive start to the season for the hosts before Joe Neville, himself in fine fettle, equalised in the next.
Andrew Haggarty and Keith Robertson shared the next two frames before the Amber Valley cuemen took control in the scotch doubles, taking all three legs courtesy of Haggarty teaming up with D Smith and Phil Longden before the two Smiths, John and Des again, rounded off proceedings with aplomb.

Bolehill No 1 travelled to Crich No 1,who were the team most in need of points out of the pair and they duly obliged with a 4-3 verdict with Dan Gould top scoring as they poached a 3-0 advantage.
The visitors fought back gamely to equalise after Ian Birks had got them on the scoreboard but eventually Paul Trevett and Nick Berry steered the Tramwaymen over the line.

Whitworth Institute were the other team to miss out on the knockout stage despite a valiant effort in a 4-3 defeat to Matlock Golf Club.
Mick Ferguson top scored for the hosts while Graham Jones was on target twice in the singles legs, defying the extra handicap with his team a player down on the night.

Elsewhere Alfreton No 2 ensured their place in the next phase courtesy of a 4-3 win over Crich No 2.

Open Individual Handicap final 19/20: Josh Lee (Edgefold) 4, Keith Robertson (Bolehill No 2) 1.

STEVE STAYS COOL IN DECISIVE BLACK BALL SUCCESSES

STEVE BULLOCK ... came through singles and doubles cliffhangers
BELPER STRUTT CLUB continued to put the pedal to the metal in the latest round of T & M Motors Snooker League fixtures as they came back from Bolehill No 2 with a hard fought 3-2 victory.
Steve Bullock came through a tight opener on the deciding black which was almost fluked by his opponent before staying right on the lip of the pocket for the grateful recipient.
Joe Neville continued his successful comeback to equalise in the next with a 68-55 scoreline and when  Darren Bunting added to that in the next with a 77-46 salvo things were looking good for the home team.
But Justin Weller equalised soon after and then in an edgy low scoring encounter, Bullock and Wayne Shooter carried their team to victory on the deciding black.

Bolehill No 1 won 3-2 at Whitworth Institute where Ian Birks continued in his recent break-building mode en route to victory with a run of 30 whilst Mick Ferguson took both his frames for the hosts, taking his singles leg after opponent Ricki Slack had potted the black only to go in-off.

Alfreton No 2 are another team jostling at the head of the table and they also secured a 3-2 success over Crich No 2 with Ben Monk notching breaks of 31 and 28 whilst Andrew Beardsley had runs of 25 and 23 as they took each of their singles and doubles legs. Ady Lowe remained undefeated in both his legs for the Tramwaymen.

Zooming to the top of the table were Matlock Golf Club, for whom Tony Blant registered twice, once with the extra handicap, due to a late withdrawl from the team in their 4-1 defeat of Edgefold.
Robert Muxlow top scored for the hosts.

And elsewhere, Crich No 1 picked up their first victory courtesy of a 4-1 triumph against Alfreton No 1. Martin Byard made a fine debut as he top scored whilst Des Smith maintained his unbeaten record for the Amber Valley cuemen.

FIVE-WAY TIE AT THE TOP AFTER 3rd ROUND OF FIXTURES

IAN BIRKS ... starring role for BOLEHILL No 1

WITH A five-way tie at the top of the T & M Motors League and just five points separating all ten teams, it certainly couldn't be much tighter after the third round of fixtures were played out.

Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 are already many people's tips for the title and they entertained Bolehill No 1 with a narrow lead at the head of affairs prior to the break-off.
Bolstered by Chesterfield League hotshot Steve Donner (51 break) who came from some way adrift in the opener, the Amber Valley cuemen raced into an early lead before Ricki Slack steadied the ship for the visitors in the next to equalise.
Simon Mays continued his winning form from the previous week with a solid all round display for 2-1 before Ian Birks took centre stage with one of his best performances for Bolehill, notching breaks of 26 and 21 as he secured 72-19 and 66-13 verdicts in singles and doubles respectively to carry his team to success.

Crich No 2 continued their dominance over Whitworth Institute, whom they had beaten 6-1 in the Six Red Cup recently and this time recorded a 4-1 tiumph with Ady Lowe (runs of 31 and 22) in fine form though Mark Gwynne-Jones retained his unbeaten record for the hosts.

Edgefold just saw off Crich No 1 team 3-2 with a thrilling 75-64 victory for Sean Dobney and Sam Lavelle in the concluding pairs leg sealing the deal after Paul Trevett and Nick Berry had hauled the Tramwaymen level

Matlock Golf Club took a 4-1 win back from Bolehill No 2 for whom Joe Neville continued to roll back the years with a second successive win while Les Mooney and Tony Blant scored useful contributions en route to individual successes.

Belper Strutt Club defeated Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 3-2 with Justin Weller and Paul Jarrett taking each of their singles and doubles legs after John Smith had top scored for the home team.
However, the previous night, the roles had been reversed in a delayed Six Red Cup encounter with Alfreton taking the spoils 4-3 after taking four of the first five frames.

GOLF CLUB HIT BACK AT GROUP LEADERS IN SIX RED CUP

LES MOONEY ... in winning form
THREE more Bob McCartin Six Red Cup matches took place in the latest round of games with Group A featuring most prominently with two of the contests taking place in that section.
Matlock Golf Club and Alfreton PM No 2 had missed their opening fixture date so were looking to make up ground and did so with each registering victories on their travels.
The Golf Club went to Crich Comrades No 2, who had taken six points from their opening encounter but the Matlock men hit the straps running with Tony Blant and Les Mooney doing the business in their respective encounters.
Ady Lowe then pulled one back for the hosts but Mooney, appearing again as a reserve due to player shortages with the extra handicap on tow, again came up trumps to make it 3-1 before teaming up with Graham Jones to assure victory before late resistance in the final scotch doubles leg saw Graeme Wood and Martin Caylow reduce the deficit to 5-2.

Alfreton also made up ground with a hard-fought 4-3 win at Whitworth Institute, who have started with two league victories but also now two losses in this competition.
Simon Mays was the main protagonist as he stayed undefeated in all three frames contested in singles and doubles after David Hobson had the hosts off to a flyer.

Elsewhere, Bolehill No 1 opened their six red campaign with a 5-2 win over Edgefold, who had previously done likewise in their opening fixture.
Steve Hawkins nudged the hosts ahead at 2-1 after Sean Dobney had equalised with excellent pots on blue and pink before Ian Birks increased the lead in the next, en route to overall success.

In the much delayed Open Individual Handicap semi final from the previous campaign, Bolehill's Keith Robertson saw off a fightback from Graham Jones to win 3-2 after leading 2-0 and being pegged back to 2-2. He now meets Edgefold's Josh Lee in the final.

Bob McCartin Six Red Cup Group A: Crich Comrades No 2 2, Matlock Golf Club 5; Whitworth Institute 3, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 4;. Group B: Bolehill Institute No 1 5, Edgefold Matlock 2.

Breaks: S Hawkins 24; G Jones 24,23.

WHITWORTH SEE OFF CHAMPIONS FOR WIN NUMBER TWO

MARK GWYNNE-JONES secured a Whitworth win
WHITWORTH INSTITUTE earned their second 3-2 victory in as many games with a superb defeat of Matlock Golf Club on their travels in the T & M Motors Snooker League.
Ian McKay opened proceedings for the hosts and it appeared to be a case of business as normal as he took a 75-34 verdict but a black ball win for Peter Lee in the next proved pivotal for the Darley Dale cuemen.
Geoff Brailsford edged a low scoring third frame 44-36 and then Mark Gwynne-Jones delivered a 79-47 scoreline to secure the success before Graham Jones and Les Mooney restored some pride for the golfers.

Edgefold took on Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 at Matlock and an entertaining fixture ensued in keeping with both teams' form in the previous week.
Ben Monk's run of 49 tipped the scales firmly in his favour in the opener whilst Gavin Shirley notched breaks of 48 and 34 as he scored heftily in both singles and doubles, where Monk again partnered to good effect. James Travis was on target for the hosts but the Amber Valley cuemen took away a 4-1 decision.

The battle of the Tramwaymen went narrowly to the Crich No 2 outfit 3-2 with Ady Lowe top scoring for the victors after Nick Berry had kept the No 1 Comrades in with a shout with a third frame success.

Elsewhere, the Bolehill teams experienced conflicting fortunes with the No 1 line-up going under 4-1 at Belper Strutt Club. Andrew Brough set them off on the right footing but the home side took control thereafter, with Paul Jarrett top scoring.

But there was joy for Bolehill No 2 as they saw off Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 3-2 with Joe Neville registering a comeback league victory after a hiatus from competitive snooker of at least 30 years but it was very clear his appearances in the billiards league in the meantime had not detracted from his potting ability. Des Smith continued his good form for the season for the visitors.

League week 2: Matlock Golf Club 2, Whitworth Institute 3; Edgefold Matlock 1, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 2 4; Crich Comrades No 1 2, Crich Comrades No 2 3; Belper Strutt Club 4, Bolehill Institute No 1 1; Bolehill Institute No 2 3, Alfreton Palmer Morewood No 1 2.
Breaks: B Monk 49; G Shirley 48,34; J Weller 20.
